Due to the prolonged heat wave and exceptionally high demand for electricity, the California Independent System Operator (ISO), which manages the state’s electric power grid, is continuing the statewide Flex Alert through Labor Day Weekend and has warned consumers to be prepared for rotating outages to be called from 4 pm. to 9 pm. today. Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Unders...tandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time. Helpful actions during the emergency include turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of appliances, such as dishwashers, clothes washers, and dryers, switching off unnecessary lighting and delaying pool pump filtering and electric vehicle charging. Our studio was destroyed in the Chalk it Up fire in Downtown Hayward, Hayward, California on Monday, Sept 1st 2020. I have no words for how I am feeling. I wil...l write, but it will not do justice to the pain, but more importantly the love that I feel. Yesterday morning at 5:45am, I received a call from the property manager of the building, Keith, he said that the building was on fire. I broke down, but headed to the studio. I got there and there was billowing smoke and for a moment I had hopes that it was under control and we may be able to salvage something, anything. A few moments later the flames erupted and I knew in my heart that there wouldn't be anything left. I fell to my knees and prayed, and cried like I haven't in a while. I went home to be with Angie & Lucca and felt completely broken. I went back after a couple of hours to see the smoldering skeleton of what used to be our home. Later in the afternoon the fire department let us into the studio and it was a complete wasteland. Everything was ash. 25 years of magic, energy, love, tears, diplomas, cordões, berimbaus, momentos, all gone. As I walked down the stairs ready to leave the studio, a picture that I took of the Mercado Modelo years ago that Ami turned into a canvas for me, the one that was on the wall of the stairwell, was laying in the corner under the red ladder, completely unscathed. The Mercado Modelo was the place that Africans were held & traded during the days of slavery in the historic area of Bahia known as the Pelorinho. It is a powerful place and place where many Capoeira stories and songs come from. It burned to the ground and has been rebuilt and today is a tourist center and reference to educate people of the tragedies of history. While I am not comparing the importance the Mercado Modelo with our studio, Mestre Acordeon's song immediately popped into my head "Mercado Modelo queimou, queimou deixa queimar" "the Mercado Modelo burned, it burned, let it burn". The vibrant colors of the photo, the meaning in the moment, the connection to Capoeira's roots, the music in my head, and the energy, everything in that split second made me recognize that God was telling me that everything is going to be alright, and that there will be more vibrance in our future. Thank you for the outpouring of love and support for us. We will rise from these ashes and a new, even more amazing home awaits us. 2020 has sure been a year that, while all of us are going to want to forget, we will never be able to. Thank you for all of the support throughout the pandemic and the outpouring of love that you have sent us since yesterday. Continuing coming to classes, in person or online, continuing memberships, supporting our Go Fund Me to keep the studio, moral support, prayers, everything. I am truly blessed. While we do not have a United Capoeira Association - Hayward at Jogo Novo for the foreseeable future, our community is what makes us who we are. The people, energy, families, relationships, everything that we create every single day. We will rise like the Phoenix and be as vibrant as ever. Many of you may not know this, but we had put together a Go Fund Me to help keep the studio doors open due to covid-19, now we will use that money to make sure that whatever our new home looks like will be better than ever. Due to a prolonged heat wave driving up electricity demand, the California Independent System Operation (ISO), which manages the state’s electric power grid, is...sued a Flex Alert Sunday, August 16 through Wednesday, August 19. Grid conditions are expected to be very challenging throughout the course of the week. The Flex Alert is in effect each day from 3pm to 10pm.
