October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Burlingame Police Department is proud to announce the official launch of the 2020 Pink Patch Project. The Pink Patch Project is an innovative public awareness campaign that is designed to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support cancer research organizations. BPD will be teaming up with other Police Agencies in this collaborative cancer awareness fundraiser. In addition to raising funds to fight breast cancer, the project's goal is to raise awareness about early detection and treatment. The Pink Patch Project centers on vibrant pink versions of the police officer's uniform patch, which have been specially designed by each agency for the campaign. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #pinkpatchproject

Burlingame residents are invited to sign up for the eighth annual Burlingame Disaster Survival Drill on Saturday, October 10, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Hosted by the Burlingame Neighborhood Network (BNN), it will be a shelter-in-place virtual drill. Residents will participate in the comfort of their own homes. Participation will also help neighborhoods qualify for free emergency supply caches valued at more than $550. To sign up your neighborhood, email [email protected] ...with your name and street address by September 22 and indicate whether you want to lead a block or join another group. You will be contacted by a BNN representative. Children are welcome. There is no charge. Burlingame’s annual drills help neighbors learn how to team up to respond to incidents following a major emergency, when emergency responders may not be immediately available. This year participants will practice communicating via different modes within their own neighborhoods. No personal interaction is needed to participate. Neighbors will be given virtual incidents and will be challenged to figure out how to respond to each incident and communicate it to others. Thanks to support from the City of Burlingame, neighborhood groups that participate in at least two drills and have other occasional activities may qualify for a free emergency cache valued at $550. This year BNN is adding disposable masks, gloves and surgical gowns to the caches. All blocks will receive drill kits (or refresher materials). These kits will include a stack of OK/Help signs that will help neighborhood responders identify where to focus assistance during a real emergency. Individuals planning to lead a drill on their block and all who are interested in joining the event are encouraged to attend two online workshops to learn how the drill works. Both are free and will be held on Zoom. Advance registration is required. To sign up, or for more information, visit BurlingameNetwork.org or email [email protected].

During September, San Mateo County recognizes both Suicide Prevention Month and National Recovery Month where individuals, organizations and communities join their voices together to raise awareness that suicide can be prevented and recovery is possible. As part of the many activities taking place this month, we are encouraging everyone to show their support by sharing their own stories and resources, or participate in the various Suicide Prevention Month and Recovery Month a...ctivities happening throughout the entire month. Together we can find hope, resilience and recovery. This year’s theme is Stronger Together." Studies confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that connectedness is an important protective factor overall for suicide and that connectedness between individuals can lead to increased frequency of social contact, lowered levels of social isolation or loneliness, and an increased number of positive relationships. 2020 has been a year of unprecedented challenge, and yet we have seen how communities can come together in innovative and supportive ways. To show your support for these observances: 1. Attend any of the free events happening throughout the month in honor of: Suicide Prevention Month: www.smchealth.org/suicide-prevention-month Recovery Month: www.vorsmc.org/recovery-happens 2. Know the Signs for Suicide. Learn how to recognize suicide warning signs, find the words and reach out for help at www.suicideispreventable.org. #BeTheOneSMC to reach out and connect with someone you know.
