Decades of research and countless independent studies have shown indisputably that regular physical exercise reduces and/or prevents incidences of those health conditions along with many other chronic diseases. These are the reasons why we unapologetically believe that fitness should be considered an ‘essential’ business.

Looking for something to do this weekend? The park is technically still closed, but Knott’s Berry Farm is still finding a way to make the season spooky. Normally California’s oldest theme park goes all-out for Halloween with haunts and trails during Knott’s Scary Farm, but this year, it’s instead throwing a brand new food festival on just a portion of the grounds. The new Taste of Fall-O-Ween is set to include food stations packed with all the pumpkin-spiced treats, apple cider, funnel cakes, soup bread bowls and other fall fare you could want, plus more eerie options such as frozen bloody lemon slime margaritas. And while there will be adult concoctions to purchase, it’s a family-friendly eventso much so that there’s even a children’s trick-or-treating trail.

Exercise does more than just boost your mood it also boosts your brain health, too. One study followed groups of rodents, some who exercised and some who didn’t. After 30 days, the rodents that exercised regularly had a better blood supply to their brains, while a group of sedentary rats showed no increase. An increased blood supply means increased oxygen and energy supply, and that equals better performance, the APA says. Other studies have suggested exercise enhances cognitive processes like thinking and memory, attention span and perception.

It is going to be another hot week here in Burbank so make sure you pack waters for those hikes! Getting enough water every day is important to keeping your body functioning correctly. Your body needs more water when you’re in warmer climates, physically active, running a fever, and having diarrhea or vomiting. It’s easy to go about your day without thinking about how much water you’ve had to drink or forget to take those sips until you start to feel bad. But, especially in the summer heat, water is vital to helping your body stay healthy.

Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body's immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before. The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from gr...owing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.) Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness. May we ask again...why gyms remain closed?!

Get ready for the weather to change soon. Make sure you’re eat healthy during this time. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are important sources of omega-3 fats as well as B vitamins, selenium, and vitamin D, which may protect against upper respiratory tract infections and over-responses by the immune system. Dairy foods add to your stores of vitamin A, some Bs, zinc, magnesium, and selenium.

A recent study proved group fitness creates a significantly larger impact on quality of life than working out alone. The study followed two groups group fitness participants and solo participants and measured their increase in physical, mental and emotional quality of life, as well as their reduction in stress. The group fitness participants saw a statistically significant decrease in stress and an increase in all three areas of life. Conversely, the participants who work...ed out alone saw a smaller decrease in stress and only reported an increase in physical and mental health. We adopt the behaviors of those around us. If you hang out with healthy people, you’ll begin to take healthier actions. A study from the Journal of Social Sciences shows that we begin to adopt the healthy behaviors of the people we spend more time with. It’s reported that people lose more weight when they spend more time with physically fit friends. To a certain degree, our behaviors are contagious. So if you want to feel better, physically and mentally, a fitness community is as good as it gets! See more

4 Mental Health Benefits of Regular Exercise If you’ve ever looked into the mental health benefits of regular exercise, then you know every workout helps release endorphins the hormones that stimulate happiness and relaxation. While this very phenomenon is the subject of extensive study, it’s only one piece of evidence in a growing body of work that suggests regular exercise is as powerful as an antidepressant when it comes to our mental health and emotional wellbeing. Here... are the latest studies explaining the mental health benefits of regular exercise: Reduce Chronic Stress Regular exercise makes your body more resilient when responding to stressful events. Research shows that while exercise initially spikes the stress response in the body, people experience lower levels of stress hormones, like cortisol and epinephrine, after bouts of physical activity, says the American Psychological Association. That means exercise is giving your body the chance to regularly practice managing stress in a safe, healthy environment. It forces the body’s physiological systems to work together in the daily battle against stress, building up your stress response muscle. Alleviate Depression More and more studies are proving that exercise can be used as a vital tool in the treatment of depression. Dr. James Blumenthal, a clinical psychologist at Duke University, conducted a study of adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder, splitting them into four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy or a placebo pill. All groups except the placebo pill group showed remission from depression. From the results, Dr. Blumenthal concluded exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants in the treatment of depression. Alleviate Anxiety Exercise doesn’t just help fight the blues; it’s also particularly helpful with anxiety and panic attacks. When you engage in strenuous physical activity, you’re essentially mimicking the responses that can come with anxiety, allowing you to learn how to manage these responses and not be overwhelmed by them in other situations, says the American Psychological Association. Boost Brain Health Exercise does more than just boost your mood it also boosts your brain health, too.

How We are Building the Best Gym in Burbank 20+ Years of Burbank Fitness History Burbank Fitness Club is home to a historic spot in the Burbank fitness community. The location has had strong community support for the fitness culture, but after decades of use, the facility and operations were ready for a major overhaul. Burbank Fitness Club owner, Tom Tunnicliffe, stepped in to bring this iconic Burbank fitness location to a new elevated condition that the facility has never s...een. Tom began a thorough assessment of the space and operations and quickly realized there was much to be done if he wanted to give this community a gym that it deserved. Amanda Benson-Tilch joined the team as the Managing Director. Mrs. Benson-Tilch has a deep history of experience in both marketing and business consulting which was a perfect fit for the task at hand. When you’re transitioning ownership, your vision has to be very clear, Amanda explained. For us, it was to provide a better experience from the moment you walked in the facility while still retaining the stable feeling of a community gym. This location has been a gym in the community for over 25 years. Our number one goal was to maintain a level of respect from the local fitness community, while over delivering with value at the same time. We wanted to honor its history by building upon it, rather than starting over. Such grandiose goals, however, required big changes and, more importantly, the right team to help execute their new vision. I cannot do it all by myself, Amanda continued. So, finding that team, trusting that team and making sure they see our vision that was vital to the success of Burbank Fitness Club’s transformation. And you really must be clear. You cannot just hand over a pair of glasses and expect your team to see your vision the way you see it. That is where communication and culture become so important because we want this gym to be a great place for our team, as well as our members, and grow from there. See more

City officials and business groups in Valley neighborhoods have shut down heavily trafficked thoroughfares to better accommodate open-air dining during the pandemic. Venturas Main Street, Burbanks San Fernando Boulevard and Pasadenas Colorado Boulevard are now dotted with outdoor seating and tables spread six feet apart. The street closures are an effort to create safe ways for consumers to rejoin their local retail economies and help keep restaurants afloat as Southern California struggles to contain the coronavirus.
