New wheel build warranted a new shop rag. #handbuiltwheels

Mechanical disc brakes have their place. Some folks just know cables and don’t want to fuss with fluids. And sometimes you only have a set of mechanical shifters you want to use instead of buying more parts for a build. . That was the case with this bike. I had the Ultegra 11s shifters and if I didn’t use them on this, where would I get to use them? This bike started off with Avid BB7 calipers, because that’s where you go first when discussing mechanical disc brakes. T...hey were ok. And when someone needed a set of Avids, like now, I sold them the calipers off my bike. What to replace them with? . I had seen the area Shimano guy using a set of disc calipers with his Dura Ace group and thought, that seems like a decent option. And now it’s my favorite option with Shimano levers. The non-series, lowly BR-R317 caliper uses the same G series pad that would fit in an XTR caliper and the calipers are supplied with the IS/Post adapter. And they work great. Easy adjustment. My service department has been spending way too much time filling in for my purchasing department chasing down parts and not enough time at the work bench. Time to build some wheels.

This might be my favorite view on my morning commute to the shop. The contrast of the hillside to the sky, the ever changing color of the hillside - green from winter rains, shades of taupe as the grasses die out during the summer, cows grazing year-round, though not today. . It’s also a really simple view. Nothing but a road, hillside, some trees, overhead wires. Maybe that’s why I like it. Simple. During this pandemic, my life in and out of the shop has simplified an...d I just can’t get enough of simple. Riding a bike every day is a form of simplicity. The last time I put gas in my car was mid-January and there’s still over 1/3 of a tank. . As 2020 winds down, I am looking forward to a new year, new challenges, but always looking for a simple solution to any challenge. Life does not have to be hard. .
