Congratulations Daniel Magill for winning your contest in London! So glad our club could help you polish this.
Wonderful insights from our honorary member from across the pond Daniel Magill. We enjoyed his humorous speech the week before last and look forward to this Ambassador from District 91 visiting again. Our only concern is if Dan has created eulogies about all of us. You had to hear his speech to get that one!
Honored to have Toastmaster Daniel Magill from London practice his humorous contest speech at our club tonight. He visits us every few months. Daniel is kneeling down in front with the blue shirt. Next to him is another Brit, Pia Turner DTM, a past president of our club. And many members of our club as well as three guest! Always lots of fun in Palm Desert on Wednesday nights.
Pia Turner being recognized for becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), the highest honor you can achieve in Toastmasters. Took her many years to climb this mountain. On her left are two DTM's who assisted her, Paul Clark and Sharon Kenty. On Pia's right is our club's VP of Education Vincent Lopez. Congratulations!!!
Pia Turner welcomes Sarah Cardella as they kickoff the International Speech Contest final round of 2019!

What is the World Championship of Public Speaking? The World Championship of Public Speaking is the final round of Toastmasters annual International Speech Contest. The contest starts with over 30,000 Toastmasters competing at clubs around the globe. Then it continues through the Area, Division, District and Semi-Finals until only 10 speakers remain. The 10 finalist give their speeches at the annual convention in August and one is selected as the World Champion for that year.... Even if you're not planning on joining the competition, watching these videos of select finalist can help you improve your own speeches and ability to impact an audience. If you're thinking about competing, these videos will give you a clear idea about the type of speeches that win. This collection of videos was put together by Don Shapiro who reached the District Championships in this contest and coached Pia Turner who took 3rd place at District. He has viewed over 40 speeches given in the World Championship round. From that, he selected the following 9 speeches for you to view. Many won the World Championship. Some took 2nd or 3rd. Don feels these 2nd and 3rd place speakers were better than some speakers who came in 1st in certain years. This collection represents a very diverse group of speakers with different speaking styles. You might like some styles a lot and not care for others as much. You can learn something from all of them. See comments for collection
New word of the week ?
Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you imagine. Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart Dear Confident Speakers, Our club's annual speech contest will be held this March. There will be a prepared speech contest and an evaluation contest. Winners at our club will compete against the winners of others clubs.... March 6, 2019: International Speech Contest March 13, 2019: Evaluation Speech Contest Toastmasters gives us many opportunities to challenge ourselves. Participating in a Toastmaster speech competition offers us a growth experience beyond compare. By challenging ourselves more than normal, we learn things we couldn't learn any other way. Challenge yourself, grow, and give yourself an opportunity you’ll never forget! International Speech Contest You develop and deliver a 5 to 7 minute speech that will inspire the audience and ends in a call to action. This is an inspirational speech contest. To be eligible, you must have completed six speeches or two levels in Pathways. The International Speech Contest has six levels of competition - Club, Area, Division, District, International Semi-finals, and the final round at the Toastmasters International Convention which is called The World Championship of Public Speaking. Yes, this is a very big deal and lots of fun. Our club has two members who have reached the District Championship and one member who has reached the Division Championship in this contest. They along with other senior members are available to coach you on the writing and delivery of your speech. Evaluation Speech Contest All contestants will evaluate the same speaker. You are taken outside the room after the speech so you don't hear anyone else's evaluation before you give your own. This contest ends at the District Championships. We have members who have competed at the Area and Division level in this contest who can help you to improve how you evaluate speeches. Area Contest for Club winners will be held on Saturday, March 30th Petra Schoning is the Chair of this year’s Confident Speakers competition. Please inform her via e-mail or phone of your desire to participate. Feel free to ask Petra, Corina, Pia Don and Paul any questions you have about these contests.
