The rich young ruler Matthew wrote about in Matthew 19 had a problem letting go. When he approached Jesus, he asked, What good thing must I do to get eternal life? (v. 16). He seemed sincere, but he didn’t want to fully surrender his life to Jesus. He was rich, not only in money, but also in his pride of being a rule-follower. Although he desired eternal life, he loved something else more and rejected Christ’s words. When we humbly surrender our life to Jesus and accept H...is free gift of salvation, He invites us, Come, follow me (v. 21). What one thing does Jesus require of us to receive salvation and the promise of eternal life with Him? What’s keeping you from fully surrendering to Him? Dear Father, thank You for offering Your Son as payment for my sin. Help me to surrender wholly to You.

For all its excitement,, a new year can be unsettling. None of us knows the future or what storms it may hold. Many New Year’s traditions reflect this: Fireworks were invented in China to supposedly ward off evil spirits and make a new season prosperous. And New Year’s resolutions date back to the Babylonians who made vows to appease their gods. Such acts were an attempt to make an unknown future secure. When they weren’t making vows, the Babylonians were busy conquering peop...leincluding Israel. In time, God sent the enslaved Jews this message: Do not fear . . . . When you pass through the waters, I will be with you (Isaiah 43:12). Later, Jesus said something similar when He and the disciples were caught sailing in a violent storm. Why are you so afraid? He told them before commanding the waters to be still (Matthew 8:2327). Today we push out from the shore into new, uncharted waters. Whatever we face, He’s with usand He has the power to calm the waves. What possibilities excite you as you look forward to a new year? What worries can you place in God’s hands? God, thank You that whatever this new year brings, You will be with me in it

Of all the action-based messages in the universe, there’s one that matters most. When we want to be shown who we are in God’s eyes, we need look no further than His actions on the cross. In Romans 5:8, Paul wrote, God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The cross shows us who we are: those whom God so loved that He gave His one and only Son for us (John 3:16). Against the mixed messages and confusing actions of broken p...eople in a broken culture, the message of God’s heart rings clear. Who are you? You’re the one so loved by God that He gave His Son for Your rescue. Consider the price He paid for you and the wonderful reality that, to Him, you were always worth it. How have you been defining your worth? What false messages might you need to discard or reject in exchange for comprehending the value that God places on you? Father, I can never understand why You would love me so much or give Your Son for my forgiveness. Your love is unsearchable and Your grace is amazing. Thank You for making me Your child!

Give It All You’ve Got When it comes to giving, the apostle Paul was clear: God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). But his encouragement to the believers in Corinth, and to us, is a variation of scaling. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart (v. 7). We each find ourselves at different giving levels, and sometimes those levels change over time. Comparison is not beneficial, but attitude is. Based on where you are, give generously (v. 6). Our God has promised that the disciplined practice of such cheerful giving brings enrichment in every way with a blessed life that results in thanksgiving to God (v. 11). How would you describe your giving: Cheerful? Reluctant? Under compulsion? Not comparing yourself to anyone else, what might cheerful giving look like?
