Alexa received her B.S. degree from Grand Canyon University in Psychology and is currently studying at Azusa Pacific University for a Masters’ degree in School Psychology. She has always had a deep love for kids and knew this was her calling. Entering the field of School Psychology, Alexa hopes to rally alongside kids who need an equitable learning environment to be successful. Choosing ABA to get her feet wet in the field was one of the best decisions she has made. It has only solidified her passion for working with kids and watching them grow. In her spare time, Alexa loves to hike, spend time with her cat, garden, and visit Disneyland.

Early on in her career, Rosa was interested in serving groups of people who face difficult health disparities and in her search, she came across the field of ABA. Her decision to pursue to career path as a Behavior Therapist was also influenced by a family member who has a developmental disability. NCAAS is excited to announce that it successfully secured language in the Fiscal Year 2020 Labor-HHS-Education Funding Bill to highlight the importance of the f...ederal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), cite health plan and insurer requirements that violate MHPAEA, direct CMS to ensure compliance with MHPAEA, and encourage training of those individuals who authorize and deny treatment. Importantly, the language explicitly identifies parent or caregiver participation requirements, preauthorization processes, location of services exclusions, and fail-first policies as examples of MHPAEA violations in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. Many thanks to all of the NCAAS members whose tireless lobbying and support made this possible! To join NCAAS, visit www.nationalautismcoalition.org. Here is the pertinent excerpt: Mental Health Parity. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) was enacted more than 10 years ago to prevent group health plans and health insurance providers that provide mental health or substance use disorder benefits from imposing less favorable benefit limitations on qualifying mental health benefits than on medical or surgical benefits. The Committee is aware of instances where insurers, covered health care plans and managed care organizations (MCO), including MCOs that manage state Medicaid programs, may be imposing conditions for access to treatment for mental health services, including services for Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, that are not imposed on medical or surgical benefits. These limitations may include parent or caregiver participation requirements, preauthorization processes, location of services exclusions, and fail-first policies. The Committee directs CMS to ensure compliance with MHPAEA by regularly issuing guidance to insurers, covered healthcare plans, and MCOs, that outlines how compliance with MHPAEA is to be achieved. This guidance should include recommendations for appropriate training of personnel responsible for benefit authorizations, adverse benefit determinations, and payments. These agencies should ensure that such informational bulletins also provide appropriate consumer and complaint information that helps patients take action when they encounter MHPAEA violations. #autism #MHPAEA #mentalhealthparity #NCAAS
