New La Jolla mural uses bandleader’s century-old quote to bring modern race issues into focus. If the latest installation in the Murals of La Jolla program lo...oks familiar, there’s no need to get your eyes checked. The new In Chains mural was done in the same style and by the same artist as its predecessor, Is All That It Proves. Both are Snellen eye chart-inspired pieces by Marcos Ramirez ERRE with quotes written in place of the letters one would read for an eye test. In Chains contains the Paul Whiteman quote Jazz came to America three hundred years ago in chains. The Murals of La Jolla program was created in 2010 by The La Jolla Community Foundation and subsequently relinquished to the care of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, which oversees the program. Repost from @morganmillerthe3rd Today I hung copies of my 2020 drawings in the Athenaeum Art Center gallery. The photos on this post show 51 drawings in three rows. They are in chronological order from left to right columns. I plan on adding 3 more drawings for a total of 54 on the wall. I plan on also adding an artist's statement. The AAC and the school are still closed because of COVID, but we were permitted to hang a show that will be called: "2020 So Far". We plan on ha...ving safe, socially distanced viewing by appointment. Besides my drawings, the other work in the show is anti-racism prints collected by Printmaking As Resistance. These prints are a small collection from all over the U.S. See the prints on their Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/printmakingasresistance/ I am currently working on putting together the 2020 drawings into three books. Each book will cover three months. Book One: March, April, May Book Two: June, July, August Book Three: September, November, December The books will have letterpress covers printed on chip board with a linocut illustration. The inside covers will be printed with a linocut pattern for end pages. The inside pages will be printed digitally. The binding will be hand sewn. Each book will be an edition of 50 copies, signed and numbered. More information on how to order copies to come soon.

The Port of San Diego is excited to announce two Call for Artist opportunities! The Port of San Diego invites professional artists to submit their qualification...s for two public art projects as part of its Percent for Art Program. This is a unique opportunity for local and national artists to create innovative, engaging, permanent, public artworks on Port tidelands and enrich the experiences of visitors to the waterfront. Two new public parks, Sweetwater Park and Harbor Park, will be built along the Chula Vista waterfront as part of the Port’s transformational Chula Vista Bayfront redevelopment project. Each park has its own public art component with a separate application process, budget, goals, and eligibility requirements. Deadline to submit is Saturday, July 11, 2020. Applicants can submit their qualifications and find more information on the Port’s website: https://www.portofsandiego.org//waterfront-a/opportunities Sweetwater Park Sweetwater Park will be built near the National Wildlife Refuge and Sweetwater Marsh on the north side of the development, and carries an art budget of $80,000. Artists should consider the influence of the natural landscape, local ecological features, and movement of pedestrians. This regional call is open to Southern California artists in San Diego, Orange, or Los Angeles Counties. Harbor Park Harbor Park will be built along the bayfront and beach areas surrounding a soon-to-be-constructed hotel and convention center complex, and carries an art budget of $195,000. Artists should consider the bayfront landscape and the interactions between people who are enjoying this area. This national call is open to artists in the United States. I don’t think about art while I work, I think about life. - Jean-Michel Basquiat The (Anti) Product Postcards (c. 1980) a set of 10 annotated postcards created by Jean-Michel Basquiat early in his career. ... The postcards are xeroxed prints of collages the artist created with paint, found materials, photographs, and ink, mounted onto card stock to make them seem like postcards. (Anti) Product Postcards reflect Basquiat’s signature style of elusive symbols, diagrams, and obsessive scribbling- a style he had developed by the time he was 20 years old! #basquiat #athenaeumfromhome #postcard #art #talent @ Logan Heights, San Diego
