<> That face you make when you have only one more lecture to record for the night. Grateful that sleep shall cometh soon. Why didn’t I appreciate sleep when I was a kid? I mean, I remember that as soon as I got in 1st grade I got out of nap time by begging the teacher to let me clean up and put away the toys!!... Now, I’m adult and I literally calculate my sleep so that I won’t wake up in the middle of a REM Cycle! Did you know that During 7-8th hour of sleep is when the brain repairs itself, prepares for the day and consolidates long term memories? Did you know that if you are sleeping less than 8 hours you are not operating at peak optimal performance and your memory and executive functions are impaired? Did you know that If you can’t sleep, you can’t heal? One of my foundations of health MUST HAVES for clear skin, long hair, decreased weight, pain or anxiety is sleep Everyone knows how many hours of sleep is acceptable but how many of you actually get it Raise your hand if you get 7.5 or more hours of sleep a night average (or give me a or ) Give me a face palm if you get less than that ! (or or ) I really want to see how many people out here living that face palm sleep life ! #nojudgement #allLove #allfun #learnandplay #sleepnaturally #lifeofaninsomniac #goodsleepmatters #insomnia #naturopathicmedicine See more

<> There is something really special about feeling a since of belonging and being understood. When you walk into a medical office and the doctor sitting across from you looks like you there is an immediate since of calm reassurance that they know you and understand what you are going through. Research shows that patients are more honest and communicate their health concerns better when seeing a doctor that shares the same ethnic background as them. You c...an see how this can be problematic when there are so few doctors who are BIPOC doctors One thing we CAN do is Teach cultural competency in medicine Understand that; Our BIPOC patients should be made to feel welcomed at any and all clinical office Our BIPOC patients should not have to tolerate the stereotypes and stigmas that medicine in the past has subjugated them to. AND furthermore; it should be no longer acceptable on any level for a doctor to ever say, I’m not sure what that is because I am not well versed in treating darker skin (an actual real doctor said this to a patient!!!) Integrative Dermatology: Clinical Pearls for Treating Skin of Color I created this lecture to do this and Many thanks to The Academy Of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) for having me and for caring for your fellows enough to train caring and culturally competent physicians! <> There is still a lot going on in the world. Lots of chaos; people becoming sick, losing jobs, losing loved ones and just general unrest. It is difficult for me sometimes to take time out and just breath. This weekend However, I literally took a moment to smell the roses. Even as a doctor and wellness educator, I forget that something as simple as a walk in fresh air and taking in God’s beautiful earth can be so healing to the soul. Are you making time t...o just BE? Are you walking 30-45 minutes daily? Are you spending time taking deep breaths daily ? Do you plan time to do at least one relaxing activity every week? Do you have a creative hobby that you can get lost in? Some of us are watching to much TV. Some of us are working too hard. Some of us are doing both but neither is wrong, just out of balance. The fix? If you feel that you are not getting enough exercise, go for a walk today. If you are busy working too much, go for a walk today! It is really that simple... walk, breath and heal! Calm the chaos, find balance. PRO-TIP Research shows that walking 30-45 minutes a day can lower your blood pressure by 10 points! Let me know if you went for a walk today either in your story, comments or DM me. Accountability is everything ! P.S. My mask in behind my back. Stay safe out here! #AskDrDJ #fitness #motivation #breath #walk #highbloodpressure #riseandgrind #quarantine #beach #peace #chaos @ Coronado Island, Coronado California See more

<> I just had this conversation with two beautiful colleagues today on an FB Live. Many of my new patients come in with a concern and I ask them about things such as sleep, diet ,energy and bowel movements. I hear a range of answers. Oh, my sleep is good... ’My diet is pretty healthy My energy is normal, I guess My bowel movements are normal I have to have them clarify. What is good? What is normal? Some people think that having a 3/10 energy on a scale of 1-10 is good 1 meaning can’t get out of bed. (Eek! Wha?) Some people never drink water and some never eat vegetables and that is normal... for them. Some people poop once a week and think that is normal... (*PRO-TIP* it’s not ) The reality is, just because something is common or normal for you doesn’t mean it is optimal functioning for your body. This is why it’s important to learn to know the difference between what your body is doing and what it should be doing. Here’s a few things to consider: You should be sleeping 7-8 hours each night You should be having 7-9 servings of vegetables a day Your Energy may vary throughout the day, but you should wake refreshed in the morning and not have any trouble falling asleep You should poop 2-3 times a day (BONUS *PRO-TIP* most people with acne, eczema and psoriasis are constipated... mmhhmm). If you have any questions let’s talk! I love this stuff! Drop a comment below or schedule a free 15 meet and greet with me or any of our docs @nourishmedicalcenter. #AskDrDJ #insomnia #eatinghealthy #sleepingbeauty #healthyskintips #acnepositive #skingoals #naturopathicmedicine #naturalskincareremedies #naturalskincare
