Meet Rosa Aguilar! Today we went to visit her little workshop, perched on a high hill overlooking the village of Capula. She’s always a pleasure to visit, sitting in the back room proudly talking about her family as the clay is taken up and skeleton figures flow like water from her hands. Like many of our artisans, Rosa has experienced the tremendous negative economic impact of the global pandemic. We’ve been sending her routine commission payments to economically assist her... family, in anticipation of actually traveling ourselves. Six months late, but here we are now, and what a display she’s created! Rosa has been creating her wonderful day of the dead figures for many years now, more recently with the help of her beloved son Balthazar and his young wife. In fact, Rosa was one of the first three artisans in Capula to begin creating catrinas. She remains to this day humble and unassuming. She disfavors exhibitions and fame, and prefers the simple act of creating with her family alongside her. As a result of Rosa’s dedicated efforts, the shelves are overflowing with hundreds of pieces, all lovingly fashioned by her own hands. There’s romantic couples nestling on a park bench, delicate mermaids perched on sea rocks, proud charros standing tall, wedding couples, charming witches with baskets of apples - or skulls, and of course La Catrina herself with her equally dapper consort, the catrin. I’m actually overwhelmed by the sheer scale and scope of her inventory. There sadly hasn’t been any tourism to buy her pieces for most of the year. Rosa has never been one for competitions but even if she wished, she couldn’t participate. The Mexican government has shut down every contest and competition for 2020. And so Rosa is very glad to receive us as we move from table to table, taking in the bounty of her efforts. When you take a look at these pictures, you’ll be overwhelmed too! I had such trouble choosing which of her charming, rustic figures that I decided to bring them all home! No, seriously - over four hundred of her day of the dead skellies will soon be arriving at Zanzibar!

Another day, another adventure at San Miguel de Allende! It’s Josh with Zanzibar, still docked at San Miguel de Allende. I’ve been here a week now and so far I’ve found some wonderful treasures to bring back and share! While I’m here in Mexico for several weeks, I have a few limitations affecting my schedule - namely the local village markets I’m eager to explore. So today is my last here in San Miguel. I visited nine different artisans and workshops yesterday, and another s...ix today, including a family who makes fantastic mirrors out of tin and talavera tile! Those will be on another post, but for now it’s all about the beautiful handicraft made of hojalata and paint. One such source is Uriel and his wife Ruth, who work upstairs from their sunny and golden shop whose walls are encrusted with the fruits of their labors. Their specialty is hearts; hearts decorated with feather pendants, hearts with piercing arrows, hearts with flowers, hearts on stands, hearts of every description and design. All are made of tin, produced on another site by three family members. The finished tin is brought to Uriel and Ruth, where they alone laboriously color each piece with several layers of paint and lacquer. Their tiny daughter Annabelle plays beneath the work table on a blanket, taking naps when she feels, otherwise weaving tales for her dolls to The works have a marvelous collective presence, which is why they caught my eye just as Ruth was opening the rustic wooden doors to their threshold. They hadn’t been open earlier that week so of course I hadn’t seen anything. How fortunate it was that I happened to be passing by as I was picking up another set of purchases, otherwise I might have missed them altogether! I’ll miss these rambling cobblestone streets with the old houses all painted in shades of turmeric and cinnamon, the bougainvillea overflowing the high garden walls, the ancient wooden doors with their curious knockers. But I’m on a mission, and I sadly can’t stop to smell the marigolds. There’s further opportunity waiting to be discovered, and tomorrow we set sail for another port of call! In the meantime, enjoy this sneak peek of some of our new tin treasures!

¡Hola mi amigos! Soy Josh aqui at an artisan market in the incredible colonial town of San Miguel de Allende. The current target: tin! Nichos, mirrors, candleholders, lanterns, boxes, crosses, hearts, and anything else that might catch my eye. The pandemic is no stranger to our southern neighbors, and the market reflects this in the number of shuttered stalls and limited hours. But right now it’s high siesta, which means folks are pausing to take a break - and so am I. I’m ...sitting here at a charming little niche in the market, eating ‘gorditas’; thick flour pockets similar to a pita, fried in very hot lard after being stuffed with, in my case, tinga de pollo con queso y salsa chile verde. From an adjacent vendor I have a large cup of freshly pressed apple and orange juice. It’s a simple and fulfilling lunch, and my enthusiastic appreciation apparently surprises the ladies making my repast, as I squat on a stool devouring their culinary handiwork. I’m the only gringo here insofar as I can see, which is another facet of the economic challenges being faced by the community. What affects the United States affects Mexico, as one person says to me. There’s a lot of relief in the eyes of our artisans as I add more and more to the pile of handicrafts I’m purchasing from them. More than one workshop truly expected me to only want a handful of pieces, which it seems has been their experience with other clientele this year. Fortunately for them, and for Zanzibar as well, I’m able to surprise more than just my gordita ladies. And it’s all thanks to the support of customers like you. Yes you, reading this post now. We’re so lucky to have you. So on behalf of myself, the whole crew at Zanzibar, and the hundreds of artisans we represent, ¡muchisimas gracias! *sorry the picture isn’t merchandise.

Karwa Chauth is a popular Hindu festival celebrated predominantly in Northern India, and this year the festival was celebrated across the world on November 4th. The festival is a celebration of marriage, during which the wife fasts for the day as prayer for a healthy and long life for her husband. According to Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth takes place during the Hindu calendar month of Kartik in the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi phase. Karwa Chauth coincides with another important... festival, Sankashti Chaturthi, which is a fasting day in honour of Lord Ganesha. On Karwa Chauth women begin their fast from sunrise and don’t consume even a drop of water, let alone food, until they see the moon. The festival is celebrated differently across the states, but in popular culture and Bollywood we see the culture of women fasting through the day, dressing up and applying henna on their hands, then when the moon rises they see the moon through a sieve and then their husbands through it, then they are fed food and water by their husbands. However, in reality the traditions vary slightly, in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, women pass pots called karvas among themselves, seeing the reflection of the moon in the water or through a sieve, after this they offer water to the moon. The husband then gives water to his wife after which she breaks her fast and eats. In Andhra Pradesh the festival is celebrated as Atla Tadde, women dress up in traditional clothing, apply henna and sindhoor which symbolises their married status. In other parts of North India, women get together and listen to Karwa Chauth katha. Women observing this fast get together on this day and celebrate it by narrating a folk tale, reading Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha and singing folk songs-- all of which make it a lively festival. Women also worship Goddess Parvati in the Karwa Chauth puja followed by Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh and Lord Kartikeya. Shown here is a 32 true bronze lost wax Parvati statue from India. Happy Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos - the Mexican Day(s) of the Dead holiday celebrating friends and family that have passed. Mexico’s Days of the Dead start on the night of October 31st when the souls of children return to our realm while the following two days, All Saints and All Souls’ Day (Nov 1 and 2nd) are when the adult souls return and finally on the night of the second is when everyone gathers at the cemetery and have a feast. Elaborate altars called ofrendas are... put together in homes, churches and public squares. An ofrenda is an altar with a collection of objects placed on a ritual display during the annual and traditionally Mexican Día de Muertos celebration. An ofrenda, which may be quite large and elaborate, is usually created for an individual person who has died and is intended to welcome them to the altar setting. Their photo, favorite objects that they owned or treasured, drinks, flowers, papel picado, burning candles and copal incense and a lot of food! Handmade Japanese Sake Sets. Kyoto, Japan. $20 and up. Did you know? Sake is called Nihonshu, which means the wine of Japan! We call sake sake and not saki! But in Japan, sake means all alcoholic beverage, so the real name for sake is nihonshu.... There are only 4 ingredients in sake: rice, water, mold and yeast! These few ingredients are responsible for so many complex flavors. Amazing! Sake is fermented not distilled! That’s why it is called a sake brewery, because sake is fermented like wine and beer. Sake has 1/3rd the acidity of wine! For those who easily get reflux, sake is a far friendlier libation! Sake has an alcohol content similar to that of wine! Zanzibar carries many sake and tea sets which are all hand crafted and fairly traded from Japan! Plus Japanese dishes, Zen Furin Bells, chopsticks, Maneki Neko cats and more! Imports from over 100 countries!
