National Artists Fernando Amorsolo (painter) and Guillermo Tolentino (sculptor) were lifelong friends. Their frankness evident in a chatty letter from Amorsolo ...to Tolentino in 1919, describing his trip through the U.S. Only a fragment of the original letter survived. It contains references to: art, Philippine independence, prostitution, women's body parts, and critical reviews of the exhibits he saw in San Francisco museums. Amorsolo closed the letter in a way that reminds us that under their genius and greatness, historical figures are human like you and me. #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #AmbethOcampo #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #letters #history #amorsolo #tolentino

ANA and the King of Cambodia. In 1872 Norodom I of Cambodia visited the Philippines and presented a jewel to Ana Rojas of Bulacan. Two decades later, she p...resented the jewel to the Virgin of the Most Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila. I hope to see the actual thing some day and content myself now with pictures from Rafael del Casal's collection. My Inquirer column today on the King's visit: https://opinion.inquirer.net/135049/jewels-of-the-virgin #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #Norodom #Cambodia #jewelry

Freud often asks me: "tell me about your mother!" Marriage freed my mother from her wicked stepmother. That was not all. She asserted her will over the ...two most important men in her life: her father and husband. From childhood my grandfather never allowed scissors near her beautiful head, so the first thing she did after her marriage was to cut her hair. My father went courting often in a cashmere cardigan, grown smooth and soft with use, when they married the favorite cardigan became a "basahan" [rag]. My mother almost became Rapunzel or Godiva, what about yours? Tell me about your mother :) #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #mothers #hair

When food and history research go together. KARIHAN LUVIMIN, probably the first Filipino restaurant in Japan, was run by exiled revolutionary general Artemio Ri...carte and his wife Agueda. It was in operation from the 1920's till 1943 when Ricarte was returned to the Philippines by the Japanese. Located close to the port of Yokohama, Pinoys waiting for their ship connections, like Manuel Quezon, dropped by to meet Ricarte and have a simple meal. Armed with photos, a street address, and a tourist map I made my way to 149 Yamashita-cho where Karihan Luvimin may have stood before, now occupied by the Yokohama branch of Heichinrou, the oldest Chinese restaurant in Japan. #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #yokohama #restaurant #ChineseFood #pinoy

I miss being in a classroom! Last day of class photo opps in the present are done on Zoom (left), it required a wide angle lens in the past (right). ... My first time to teach freshmen and I feel bad that on their first term in Ateneo they endured my class online and missed a great part of what is known on campus as "The Ambeth Ocampo Experience." I hope some of these students drop by the History Department when campus re-opens so I can meet them in person. #ambethocampo #thefilipinohistorian #AskAmbeth #lookingback #teachers #classof2020 .#history. . What on earth is a croquembucheng caraniuan? In the mid-1980's I would frequent the bodega of the Libreria Martinez off the Welcome Rotonda to buy prewar books ...dirt cheap. I bought multiple copies of this book on cakes and pastries with the kilometric title: Pastelería at repostería Francesa at Española : aclat na ganap na naglálamán ng maraming palacad sa pag-gauâ ng lahat ng mga bagay-bagay na matamis at mga pasteles / ni P. R. Macosta ; isinalin sa uicang Tagalog ni Crispulo Trinidad. Manila: Libreria Martinez 1919. At P5 each (P10 hardcover) they made thoughtful presents. Cover shows a "Croquembucheng caraniwan." If this is the "ordinary" type of cake built of cream puffs in a cone held together by threads of caramelized sugar, imagine what an extraordinary or special croquembouche was like! Croqueembouche, in French, refers to the pop or crackle you feel when you bite into a cream puff. Yummy! #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #cookbook #cake #pastries

Going over this handwritten letter of Jose Rizal, one of the few manuscripts written in English, is a way for my students to get a sense of archival materials a...nd how historians work. The original manuscript is preserved in the Lopez Museum and Library, part of their enviable Rizaliana collection. The image has been enhanced to make it easier to read. #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #Rizal #research #archives #library #lopezmuseum See more

ISABEL ROSARIO COOPER (1914-1960) was a Filipina actress known under the screen names "Chabing" and "Dimples." She has done gone down in history for two things.... First, being at the receiving end of the first kissing scene in Philippine cinema, in the film "Ang Tatlong Hambog" (1926). Second, being Douglas MacArthur's mistress. Documentation on the affair lies in a U.S. university where papers can be read but not reproduced or quoted from. #ambethocampo #AskAmbeth #thefilipinohistorian #lookingback #dimples #macarthur
