September 29th is one of our favorite days because it is National Coffee Day! We know how great it is to wake up to the smell and taste of a freshly brewed cup of coffee in the morning. It has become an important part of our lives because of its ability to give us that boost of energy when we need it most. Unfortunately, it does have a dark side. Coffee and other dark drinks such as wine, sodas and teas have compounds called tannins that can build up on your teeth over t...ime causing discoloration. Love coffee but hate tooth stains? Our office offers professional whitening to keep your smile nice and bright. If you are interested, we would love to provide you with more information, so give us a quick phone call or ask us about it at your next dental visit. We look forward to seeing you soon. #nationalcoffeeday2021 #nationalcoffeeday #teethwhitening #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/zUNs99PGDg0 Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

Thanks to @californiaoralsurgery for hosting a continuing education course for dentists and hygienists @oldranchcountryclub . We heard an inspiring story of overcoming Stage 4 Oral Cancer from Eva Grayzel. We were inspired to not only screen our patients for oral cancer, but to educate them on what it is and what to look out for at home. #continuingeducation #oralcancercankill #somethingtoyapabout #bestdentalteam #buenaparkdentist

As we continue to celebrate National Gum care Month, here are some signs and symptoms to look out for. Be on the lookout for red and swollen gums, tenderness and bleeding while brushing & flossing and gum recession as these can warn you that you may have gum disease. Taking care of your gums is important because the mouth is linked to the rest of your body so it can impact other health conditions you may already have. So please show your gums some love and celebrate National... Gum Care Month by brushing and flossing daily. #nationalgumcaremonth2021 #nationalgumcaremonth #periodontaldisease #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/cADflhZzgyo Photo by The Humble Co. on Unsplash

Since this month is national gum care month, the staff at Yap Family Dental wants to do our part in helping you prevent and fight against gum disease also known as periodontal disease. Did you know that 47.2% of adults over the age of 30 have some form of periodontal disease? This number increases to 70.1% in adults 65 years and older. So how can we prevent or stop gum disease in its tracks? Here are a few things you can do to prevent gum disease ... Brush gently 2 times a day (morning and night) with a soft bristled toothbrush. Do not scrub or apply too much pressure Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, when it is frayed or after an illness Let your toothbrush air dry. Storing it in a closed container can induce growth of microorganisms. Floss at least 1 time a day Maintain your recommended cleaning schedule with your hygienist #nationalgumcaremonth2021 #nationalgumcaremonth #periodontaldisease #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout https://www.cdc.gov/ora/conditions/periodontal-disease.html (reference for statistic) Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/CsPCTYYxalw Photo by Henrik Lagercrantz on Unsplash

Happy National Gum Care Month! Caring for your gums and periodontal health is just as important as keeping your teeth clean. Healthy gums will stabilize your teeth and give you the chance to keep them for a lifetime without them falling out! So what is periodontal disease exactly? It is when the tissues surrounding the tooth become inflamed due to the bacteria in the mouth. When bacteria are allowed to stay on the teeth for an extended amount of time, they form a soft film... called plaque. Plaque can eventually harden to tartar without proper removal from brushing and flossing. This tartar can spread underneath the gums where it is more difficult to remove without the aid of a dental professional. Leaving this tartar can wreak havoc on your periodontal tissues and cause bleeding, sensitivity and bone loss. You can observe National Gum Care month by taking a trip to see your hygienist or dentist to have them evaluate your gums and make sure they are the healthiest that they can be. #nationalgumcaremonth2021 #nationalgumcaremonth #periodontaldisease #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/8BkF0sTC6Uo Photo by Caroline LM on Unsplash

We hear our pediatric patients (as well as our adult patients) complain that they are too tired at the end of the day to floss or properly brush for 2 minutes. But why wait till right before bed, when your kid is drained after a long day of learning, sports, and homework? If your kid is always too tired to brush and floss right before bed maybe after dinner and between a homework break while they are still being productive is a better time for them. It’s better to brush and floss a few hours before bed then not brushing and flossing at all at the end of the day. But a friendly reminder to wait at least 30 minutes after dinner! #brush2xday #goodoralhygiene #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/qESmLLXAmWs Photo by Patricia Prudente on Unsplash

With school in full motion and schedules getting busy it gets hard to prepare healthy food and snacks. But making small switches like swapping unhealthy snacks for healthy alternatives can ensure your kids are getting nutrient enriched foods. Unhealthy meals and snacks can contain unhealthy amounts of sugar and starches which can accelerate cavities. So instead of chips, crackers, and granola bars try healthy nuts, veggie sticks, or cheese. #healthysnacks #sugarbugs #brush2xday #goodoralhygiene #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/mGP8gyGb8zY Photo by Denny Müller on Unsplash

Parents: we get it, sometimes no matter how many times you knock on your kids door to get them up and ready can be difficult. Especially the first few weeks of school as their sleep schedule adjusts to waking up early again. But rushed kids tend to rush their brushing! Kids should have enough time to brush for a minimum of 2 minutes, carefully and slowly brushing a few teeth at a time. #brush2xday #goodoralhygiene #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapab...ou Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/Y9QnUrj-gus Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Have a Night Guard or a Retainer? Here are some tips to clean it at home! Step 1) After taking the Night Guard or retainer out of your mouth, rinse it well with cold or room temperature water to wash off debris. Avoid using hot water as this could distort the material. Step 2) Brush it lightly with a soft bristled toothbrush to remove any plaque or saliva that may be hiding in the crevices. SKIP the toothpaste since it has harsh abrasives that could damage your night guard... or retainer. Step 3) Let it dry completely. Bacteria thrive in moist environments. Use a cloth or towel to absorb most of the water then let it air dry completely. This prevents bacterial buildup. Step 4) Store your appliance in a case so that it remains clean and protected. Make sure to clean the container every few days with soap and warm water as well since this too can attract bacteria. #nightguard #nightguardcare #retainer #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #somethingtoyapabout See more

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT: It's been a rough year for many small businesses in 2020. And although dental offices might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to a small business, remember your local dental office is owned and operated usually by your dentist! Without compromise, your local dental office has implemented new protocols, added layers of personal protective equipment, and tirelessly kept up to date with all the craziness that COVID-19 has brought into the d...ental world in 2020. In the spirit of supporting your local small business, don’t forget your dentist, dental hygienist, dental assistants, and front desk workers who have been working non-stop to provide necessary services for you! Want to show your office some support? Let them know how grateful you are? Here are some FREE ways to help support small dental business: 1. Referring friends and family to your local dental office. Simply referring your friends and family and letting them know how great of an office we are might encourage them to make a visit into our office. We love adding new members to our dental family. 2. And yes 2020 has made it hard to see our friends and family in person, so alternatively, you can leave a nice review so others can see what we are all about! Leaving a small token of appreciation and affirmation in your reviews helps others know about all the good experiences you’ve had at your local dental office and can help others who do not have a dental home find us better! Yelp, Google, and Facebook are all good places to leave us a review. 3. Engage in our social media posts. The more engagement there is, the more we can be seen by those who might not know about us. Things like commenting on our social media posts, sharing our social media posts, or posting a picture on your social media can help support our small business without spending a dime! How great! 4. And simply letting us know about how your last experience was. We love hearing from our patients! Encouraging words help us be motivated to keep doing what we are doing! We would like to take this time to also thank our amazing and loyal patients who have entrusted us with your oral health during this uncertain time. Thank you for allowing us to have a successful year regardless of what COVID-19 has thrown at us. It is your support and trust that keeps us open and willing and wanting to work. We hope that you and your family are still able to find small blessings and holiday cheer in these last few days of 2020! #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocalbusinesses #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #leaveusareview #fivestars #somethingtoyapabout

Tribute to Arthur A. Dugoni, DDS, MSD I remember the life of Dr. Arthur Dugoni, the Dean when I was at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry (now named after him) as an example of a life well-lived for 95 years and an inspiration to excel in my dental profession but also remember to enjoy all facets of life and serve others. Every time I heard him speak, I was impressed with his wisdom, sincerity, and inspiration. He was legendary and one of most special dental leader...s of a generation. Yesterday, our Dugoni School of Dentistry had a memorial service for him and they included this montage with Dr. Dugoni’s own inspirational words. I know it’s impossible to believe, but you will have the opportunity to define our future, right many wrongs, and help rebuild a great nation. I know you will...but along the way: Enjoy the Ride, Climb more mountains, Eat more ice cream, Go barefoot more often, Swim more rivers, Watch more sunsets, Laugh more, Fill your life with family, love, and happiness. If you do, your future will be awesome. #pacificdental #dugonischoolofdentistry #pacificalumni #inspirationalleader #leadbyexample #pacificstrong

World Radiography Day! X-rays were discovered 125 years ago by William Roentgen. Dental X-Rays are an important preventative tool your dentist needs to help detect and prevent cavities. Some patients may have worries about being over exposed to radiation when they are asked to take their yearly dental x-ray. But did you know you can get radiation from binge watching your favorite Netflix show, cleaning your beloved cat’s litter, eating foods such as bananas and carrots, and the obvious vacation destination flying from point A to point B! Now with digital x-rays, there is less exposure than traditional film x-ray and are completely safe for patients to get on a yearly basis. #worldradiographyday2020 #dentalxrays #buenaparkdentist #rdh #rda #bestdentalteam #buenaparkdentist #somethingtoyapabout

Have you done a breath check recently? Today is National 12-Hour Fresh Breath Day and we wanted to feature a few ways to keep your breath smelling fresh for long periods of time. Using mouthwash, breath mints or chewing gum may just be a temporary solution by masking the underlying factors that actually lead to bad breath, also known as halitosis. Some of these factors include poor dental hygiene, diet, tobacco use, dry mouth, some medications and certain health conditions. ...To get that 12-hour fresh breath, follow these tips! 1. Brush your teeth at least two times per day 2. Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper 3. Floss your teeth at least once a day 4. Use Mouthwash 5. Avoid foods and drinks such as coffee, garlic, onions and tobacco 6. Stay hydrated 7. Did my hygienist say a soft toothbrush is better? But I feel like hard bristles help me feel cleaner.what brand is better? Is an electric toothbrush that much better than a manual toothbrush? We get it! With so many products on the shelves and online it can be very confusing what toothbrush is really right for you. Here are some of Dr. Yap’s registered dental hygienist Michelle’s recommendations: -Always use a soft or sensitive bristle toothbrush. Brushing harder is not bet...ter. It can cause the gums to recede, also known as recession and wear away at the enamel. This can expose root surfaces and it is one of the most common causes of tooth sensitivity. Plaque is soft bacteria that is easily removed with a soft bristle toothbrush! You just have to take your time, remember 2 minutes a day, the right way is more effective than brushing aggressively quickly. -Electric toothbrushes are an amazing invention! Whether you get an oscillating-rotating (Oral B) or sonic (Sonicare) the bristles move faster than you can with a manual toothbrush, helping to blast off plaque from the surface of your teeth and gums! -Companies have curated patient specific toothbrush types for individual needs such as: heavy tartar build up, floss action, sensitive gums, orthodontic, geriatric, pediatric, etc. If you ever have any questions on which toothbrush is right for you, talk to your hygienist. They are experienced in looking at your overall oral health, gathering information about your likes and dislikes, your lifestyle and referring you to the best oral hygiene products suited for you! #nationalbrushday #toothbrush #oralbtoothbrush #sonicare #dentalhygienist #buenaparkdentist #somethingtoyapabout

WARM HEARTS: During these hard times we often forget to appreciate what we have been blessed with. Others are not as fortunate and in the season of giving (& On Giving day -December 1) we want to highlight one of our team members, Terryl, who is going above and beyond in helping the less fortunate! She is gathering warm clothes and other basic necessities to distribute during rainy days around our community. As a team, we are gathering things for Terryl and we extend this opp...ortunity to our patients to also bring items to donate. Items including: Warm used jackets, hoodies, jeans sweatpants, socks and even sneakers. As for sizes, we have found medium to XL have worked. We are also taking sleeping bags. Used and washed are best as some people have extra laying around. Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste work very well. These will be made into bags for giving out.
