Injured mountain biker rescue operation from this past weekend. The call was initially for one victim. The victims riding partner crashed a short time later, also requiring attention. It was a well coordinated effort with @lacountyfd As our local hospitals are seeing high numbers of patients, and limited available capacity, be extra cautious with your outdoor activities. You don't want to negatively impact an already overburdened system.... Stay safe this holiday season. ******************************************* AMRT has established a TeeSpring store. 100% of the proceeds from all purchases goes to the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team. On Sunday, after completing our training with @seblasd Air Rescue 5, AMRT was first on scene for not one, but two accidents on Angeles Crest Highway. The first was a car versus motorcycle accident, with the motorcycle rider transported by Air 5 to the hospital with multiple injuries. The second was a car vs ambulance. ... This isn't the first time a day of training ended with a rescue operation, but two motor vehicle accidents within minutes of each other is a first. #altadena #mountain #rescue #angelescrest #angelesnationalforest #hikersofinstagram #mra

Sunday's Team Training was ATV Training. We covered a range of topics associated with ATV operations, such as mandatory safety equipment, vehicle controls, operating standards, followed up with runs on a training course that simulated real trail and terrain situations. It was a beautiful, clear blue sky in Southern California, with temps in the mid 80's in November. ******************************************... On Sunday September 27th, while training at Cobb Estate, AMRT was approached by a male hiker who had an encounter with a female bear, with two cubs, on the Lower Sam Merrell Trail. The hiker had been coming down the trail, and upon rounding a bend, came face to face with the mother bear. She proceeded to stand on her hind legs, taking a swipe at the hiker, who sustained superficial wounds to his uppper right arm. She then ran off with her cubs. The individual was treated by... members of AMRT, and informed of the still in place closure of the @angelesforest As a reminder to everyone, the Angeles National Forest, and all trails, are still closed due to the #bobcatfire Also, because of the fire, animals are more active than usual in areas frequented by humans. You shouldn't be on the trails, but if you ignorr the closure, which you shouldnt do, watch out for wildlife. Their home has been ravaged by the fire and many are looki g for food, water and shelter. #altadena #Mountainrescue #sangabrielmountains #hikersofinstagram #sammerrelltrail #California ******************************************* AMRT has established a TeeSpring store. 100% of the proceeds from all purchases goes to the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team. Thursday night training saw the team carry out a mountain biker over the side of the trail scenario. Some trainings will have members acting as the primary victim, however, when the location chosen is as precarious as this, it's best to use our training dummy. Tonight's training was also a test for one of our members, who acted as Operations Leader for this training scenario. We are proud to say he passed, and is now a full member of AMRT. Every member of AMRT falls into thr...ee categories, trainee, probationer, and full member. It takes years of training and dedication to become a full member. #Altadena #Mountainrescue #hikela #hikersofinstagram #lasdsar #lasd

From fs.usda.gov/r5 Forest Service Temporarily Closes Southern California National Forests, Adds Prohibitions in Others VALLEJO, Calif., September 7, 2020Most of California remains under the threat of unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions with a combination of extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit. Due to these conditions, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing the follo...wing temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts. They will go into effect at 5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time on Monday, September 7, 2020, and will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change. Closure of the following National Forests: Stanislaus National Forest, Sierra National Forest, Sequoia National Forest, Inyo National Forest, Los Padres National Forest, Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, and Cleveland National Forest. Prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California. Closure of all developed campgrounds and day-use sites on National Forests in California. The wildfire situation throughout California is dangerous and must be taken seriously. Existing fires are displaying extreme fire behavior, new fire starts are likely, weather conditions are worsening, and we simply do not have enough resources to fully fight and contain every fire, said Randy Moore, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region. We are bringing every resource to bear nationally and internationally to fight these fires, but until conditions improve, and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely, the priority is always to protect the public and our firefighters. With these extreme conditions, these temporary actions will help us do both......... With temps forecasted to be 110-113 degrees the next two days, be sure to take extra precautions if venturing outdoors. Hike early or late in the day, choose a trail with shade, and bring plenty of water. Earlier this week, with daytime highs in the low 90s, a member of AMRT used an infrared thermometer to take surface temperature readings of the ground. Temps ranged from 104 in shady areas to 141 in direct sun. With air temps nearly 20 degrees higher forecast for this weekend, imagine how hot that ground will be. This is especially important for those who like to hike with their dog. In addition to the risk of heat stroke and death, high ground surface temperatures such as this can burn their paws. You may want to leave them home this weekend. Cooler weather is ahead in the forecast. Better to be safe than sorry.

With the high temps and potential for poor air quality due to the fires, Sunday training was switched from a trail & terrain hike to rope systems. AMRT trains at least every Thursday, and one Sunday a month to ensure our skills stay sharp. It's not unusual for members to get together and train on their own, outside of scheduled team trainings. #Mountainrescue... #California #Altadena #angelesnationalforest #sangabrielmountains #hikela #hikesmart #staysafe @ Altadena See more

Don't let today's slightly cooler temps cloud your judgement, it is still too hot to be hiking with a K9 companion. Dogs don't sweat, and can overheat very quickly. Its best to leave them home, especially if hitting the trail mid-day. If you insist on hiking with them, wait until the late afternoon whrn the temps are cooler and the sun is not directly overhead. Bring along a collapsible bowl and plenty of water. Dogs cannot effectively drink from a bottle. If they sit down an...d refuse to move, that is them telling you they have had enough. This picture is from a couple years ago, when AMRT responded to a call for a dog suffering from heat exhaustion. This dod was lucky and survived, unfortunately that is not always the case. #hikesmart #staycool #staysafe #Mountainrescue #sangabrielmountains #losangeles #angelesnationalforest #hikela #k9 #eatoncanyon #eatoncanyonfalls #echomountain

AMRT responded today to a call for a dehydrated and overheated hiker. @seblasd Air Rescue 5 was able to hoist the victim and transport to waiting members of AMRT at Farnsworth Park, where they were treated and released. With temperatures forecast to be 100 degrees, or higher for the next week, and extremely poor air quality due to the forest fires, please take extra precautions. Hike early or late while the temps are coolest and bring A LOT OF WATER. Also, be sure to have a ...fully charged phone, a back up battery and A LOT OF WATER. Also, try to wear light colored clothing to help prevent overheating, and carry PLENTY OF WATER. It's also best to leave your four legged friends at home to protect them from heat stroke. But if you do hit the trails with your K9 companion, bring a collapsible bowl and A LOT OF WATER. Did we mention you should bring water? #hikesmart #staysafe @ Altadena

Earlier this year, AMRT said goodbye to a much loved member, Charles "Chuck" Ballard. Chuck was a part of AMRT for more than 50 years, and made a positive impact on every person he met. A social media post cannot truly convey our feelings for Chuck, and how much he is missed. When it came time to design a new t-shirt, there was no doubt what would inspire the artwork, a classic picture of Chuck rappelling from a helicopter. The design process began approximately one year ago..., many months before his passing. The artwork has even more meaning today than when this process began. Thank you Chuck for your service, leadership, amd inspiration. Charles "Chuck" Ballard 1926-2020 @ Altadena
