Most homes in the USA are under-insured as building costs have risen dramatically in the past 2 years (at least 6.6%) due to a construction labor shortage as well as new tariffs on materials. In 2018, 14 different natural disasters, from record-setting wildfires in California to devastating hurricanes in Florida, cost the USA $91 billion, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the 8th consecutive year with at least 8 disasters in the ...billion-dollar range. 2018 was the 4th hottest year on record and that warming not only increases the risk of drought, wildfires and stronger hurricanes, it also increases the risk of severe snowstorms. Maybe a good idea to encourage your clients to review their insurance policies to reflect raised building costs? (CNBC) DID YOU KNOW? Under-insured properties pose a tremendous fiscal risk to communities, cities and states: this can result in mortgage delinquencies AND real estate tax delinquencies. DID YOU KNOW? In 2018, from May through July, much of the East Coast, down to Florida, saw rainfall up to three times normal levels, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. FEMA flood plains are reassessed about every 5 years, but they still don’t account for the increasingly extreme weather and heavier rainfall that parts of the USA are now seeing. A new cottage industry of firms that assess climate risk to real estate is emerging.(NOAA). DID YOU KNOW? Miami is investing $200 million into resilience, installing pump stations and upgrading its infrastructure. Miami Beach is on track to spend twice that, raising sidewalks and seawalls.
