WHEN WE THINK of headgear, the first image that probably comes to mind is some teen movie from the ‘80s. Headgear that bulky isn’t as common today as it was back then, but it’s still very effective at correcting specific orthodontic problems. Headgear was first invented in 1822 by J.S. Gunnell, though the term he used was occipital anchorage. His device was anchored to the top and back of the head at one end and attached to the teeth at the other, which exerted gentle pre...ssure to guide the teeth into a better position. We appreciate Gunnell’s ingenuity, but we’re glad we live two centuries later. These days, orthodontic headgear is reserved for treating complicated issues involving both bite and jaw alignment in addition to tooth alignment. Headgear keeps the mouth from getting too crowded with orthodontic appliances in these cases. Every treatment plan is unique to the specific patient, and that may or may not include headgear.
