Happy birthday to George Floyd, who would have been 48 today. Over a year ago, George Floyd's killing incited a mass movement in the fight against systemic anti-Blackness, white supremacy, and the extrajudicial killing of Black people in the U.S. But today, we want to remember Floyd for the man he was: a brother, a father, and a beloved member of his community who should be celebrating with friends and loved ones today and demand a world without martyrs. All Women's History Month we're highlighting the fierce Black women part of our Ambassador Program. They continue to remind us of the importance of destigmatizing conversations around sexual health and HIV, normalizing Black women taking charge of their sexual health, and the importance of creating trusted community leaders empowered with knowledge and expertisefor Black women by Black women. #NWGHAAD2021 #WHM2021

BAI's President and CEO, Raniyah Copeland, was featured in this article! In it, she and some of leaders of the movement in Black communities to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic outline the ways we're fighting to finally shut the book HIV/AIDS. "Ending HIV in Black America will only happen if our efforts to end HIV are led by Black communities most impacted."

We are in a moment where the HIV and healthcare sectors as must look inward and ask if their structures and decisions truly reflect the needs of those most impacted by the epidemic. We couldn't agree more. "Across the country there are reports of majority-Black areas struggling to deal with nonresident White people traveling to their communities to be vaccinated. Such inequity cannot stand," writes BAI scientific advisory committee member Oni Blackstock.

Still thinkin about this conversation between Reverend Rob Newells and BAI's very own Christopher Hucks-Ortizand: "For National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), I think that knowing your status, regardless of what it is, is one of the most loving things that you can do for yourself." https://aidsvu.org/aidsvu-qa-rob-newells-christopher-hucks/

"The abstract [...] was titled, Dismantling White Supremacy Work Culture and Anti-Blackness in Organizations. Particularly focused on HIV and other community-based service nonprofits, it shone a light on such practices as the seeking or fulfillment of grants that demand that quotas of Black people be brought into an outreach program, the requiring of high school diplomas or advanced degrees for jobs that don’t necessarily need them, and decision-making processes that shut out the input of Black staffers who are not in top leadership positions." https://www.thebody.com//texas-hiv-conference-pulled-prese

World AIDS Day may be over, but the fight to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues. In February, we launched We the People: A Black Plan to End HIV in America, outlining our recommendations and goals to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This Black-centered roadmap that is more urgent than ever in light of the COVID crisis. HIV is a disease that, like the novel coronavirus, affects the most marginalized: Black and Brown communities, LGBTQ folks, people living in poverty, our unhoused community members, people living with substance addiction, and so many others who aren’t able to thrive simply because of who they are, who they love, or where they live. Check out the recommendations and the full report on our website.

A difficult story to share. While Dr. Susan Moore was being treated for COVID, her own Facebook posts shared how medical racism contributed to her death. The way Black people continue to be treated by the health care system is why it's so hard for us to overcome medical mistrust and get lifesaving care. http://ow.ly/roGE50CTHTn

A historic presidential victory. A dream made possible by relentless BIPOC community mobilizers & voters. We did this. All of us, united. Till today, America has not valued Black lives. As we celebrate change, we’re cautiously optimistic that this leadership is least likely to harm us.

For our 'Keeping It 100 About Voting’ Series #BTAN-Mississippi leader, Cedric Sturdevant, signs off on what this election means for him and what's at stake for people living with HIV. "I am a Black SGL man, so voting for me this time and every time means my right to be me. I have to opportunity to put someone in office that will allow me to love who I chose, to marry who I chose, and support my partner and I in the process. Also, this current administration is attempting to ...take away Obamacare and protection or those with preexisting conditions, so healthcare for people living with HIV is at stake." For our 'Keeping It 100 About Voting’ Series #BTAN NY Leader Octavia Y. Lewis is completely honest about going to the polls in the #2020Election. She shares that despite the lack of federal protections for Black trans folks living with HIV like herself, she still did her civic duty this year by voting early with an absentee ballot. Octavia hopes that the outcome of this election shows "that for once it won't be business as usual and we will see a difference" but is also clear...: "That a system that was not created, designed, or implemented with people like me in mind that it will ever get me any closer towards liberation." This is why to be Black in America, voting can be a complicated, yet necessary act. ***The #2020Election is happening now. Make a plan, vote early and have your voice heard.
