Hard to believe that there used to be something as wonderful as a carousel at the corner of La Cienega and Beverly where the Beverly Center is now! But once upon a time, this was Los Angeles. One of the Pacific Seas towering neon Art Deco flowers! It’s tragic that these wonderful creations are probably sitting in the rubble of the old cafeteria beneath the pavement of a parking lot. The building was demolished in 1960 and the debris dumped into the old basement. An urban archeological dig waiting to happen! Today would have been a perfect day to visit the Selig Zoo in LA’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood. The world’s largest private zoo grew from the workings of Colonel Selig (self titled!) a vaudevillian actor turned producer who helped pioneer Hollywood’s place as the Center of film production. Having found that audiences loved adventure films especially those set in jungles Selig amassed a large variety of animals. With no place to house his menagerie of four legged actors, he created a zoo. By the 30’s the zoo became neglected and the conditions for the animals unacceptable and the zoo was closed. Almost nothing remains on the site to remind visitors of the wild adventures seen across the globe that originated within this early dream factory. #labeforetraffic #vintagela #lahistory #zoo
