Art Works Downtown opening night reception for Transitions, Friday July 12, 2013, from 5-8PM. 2013 Art Works Downtown presents Transitions, a show of photography based imagery, alternative processes, traditional materials, film, and video. juried by Thom Sempere Executive Director, PhotoAlliance. The show includes 32 artists from the San Francisco Bay Area. The show opens Friday, July 12, 2013, and runs through Friday, August 23, 2013, in the Art Works Downtown main gal...lery located at 1337 Fourth Street, San Rafael, CA, 94901. Art Works Downtown is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. An opening reception will be July 12 and August 9, 2013 from 5 - 8 PM. "It isn't often that one gets to foster an exhibition from scratch. In this case, I was given carte blanche to propose a theme for the call for entries, and knowing the richness of creativity that resides in the Bay Area, a not too specific premise was in order. Something of great interest in my own pursuits is the notion of transition," said Thom Sempere, Executive Director, PhotoAlliance and juror of the show. "A transition may imply a moment of great power or be perhaps so subtle one hardly recognizes the condition. A transition may be any kind of change- in location, in process, or taken personally, even in understanding. A transition might reflect a shift in age or in politics, a crisis or a natural unfolding. The challenge was to consider broadly this term. Any use of photography-based imagery was encouraged; alternative processes, traditional materials, film or digital. All camera formats welcomed, the results could be documentary, expressive, collaged or straight," said Sempere. "The 32 artists represented did a splendid job of responding, and in these most diverse selections, our term is manifested along the way as nouns, verbs or even the occasional descriptive adjective," said Sempere.
