A safety message from Inyo Search and Rescue- The forecast for the upcoming weekend looks very cold with a wind chill of -20 degrees, so InyoSAR has some tips f...or you: Turn around BEFORE you get cold! Just because you're very, very cold doesn't mean you are dying. You CAN survive being cold! Staying warm takes effort and it can be a team effort. Cuddle, move, eat calories, stay dry... NEVER leave a cold partner. They will just get colder. Insulation will keep you warm... not just a water proof layer alone. A water proof jacket is not made for cold. High quality down or synthetic insulation is the only way to create a micro climate inside your layers that's warm... and the thicker the insulation, the better it will keep out the cold. But the thicker it is the heavier it will be, another plus for down. Bring extra batteries and keep them in a warm place. They don't like cold. Lithium batteries work better in cold. Bring extra socks. Seriously, always have extra socks - they can even be used as mittens. Chemical shaker warm packs are nice, but rather spend the weight on real clothes. Also, the packs only work if they have air... so in your socks or tucked tight into clothing they can't breathe and won't work as well. They work in bigger, loose pockets. Also... manage your sweat! Extra effort means extra sweat and sweat means wet and wetness means COLD.

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of a longtime recently retired firefighter. Larry was an amazing person who dedicated most of his life to our department. His list of accomplishments is too long to list. Prayers and condolences to his family.

Multiple Shots Fired in Bishop Area / Suspect Taken into Custody BISHOP, CA, October 5, 2020: At approximately midnight Inyo County Sheriff’s Dispatch received ...a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance on Matlick Lane in the Bishop area with shots fired. Inyo County Sheriff’s Deputies, Bishop Police, and CHP responded. The female victim was able to run out of the house when the first shot was fired. Due to the volatile situation and potential for the suspect to fire additional shots, the surrounding residents were evacuated. The suspect was contacted by law enforcement; however he refused to comply and barricaded himself inside the residence. The suspect fired multiple rounds at deputies. A crisis negotiation team was initiated to attempt to persuade the suspect to surrender. When that effort failed the Inyo/Mono Special Enforcement Detail (SED) team deployed CS gas into the residence. The suspect came outside but was non-compliant; he was hit several times by a beanbag gun, but again retreated inside at which point he armed himself with two additional rifles. Further negotiations were attempted and more gas was used. At approximately 6:40am the suspect came outside and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office canine was deployed. Dustin Flesia, a 45-year old Bishop resident, was taken into custody. Flesia was transported to Northern Inyo Hospital for treatment. No deputies were hurt or injured. Assisting agencies included Bishop Police Department, Mono County Sheriff’s Office, CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, Bishop Fire, and Symons Ambulance Service. Charges and bail information will be made available on our online local crime portal, Citizen RIMS.

On August 16, your #BishopVolunteerFireDepartment deployed with a task force out of Mono County to assist in fighting the wild fires raging across California. They started at the #WhaleFire before getting sent to the #CarmelFire and #RiverFire, followed by the #SheepFire and finally the #SlinkFire, where a second Bishop engine was deployed with an Inyo County task force. All have returned home safely. Thank you to all the firefighters on the front lines, the ones holding down the home front and of course, the firefighter families, who are our biggest supporters.
