Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum & Mortuary

Help a less fortunate child get a present this holiday season by donating to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation's annual toy donation drive! Woodlawn Cemetery is an official drop-off site of the Toys for Tots drive through Sunday, December 13th. Toy donations can be dropped off on the first floor of the Woodlawn Mausoleum weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors who frequently birdwatch at Woodlawn Cemetery were treated with a rare Santa Monica sighting of the common poorwill this past week. The bird's habitat extends from British Columbia through the western United States to northern Mexico. They typically migrate to Mexico where they spend the winter months, and according to the birdwatchers rarely stop in Santa Monica. The common poorwill is the only bird known to go into torpor, a form of hibernation, for weeks and even months at a time. They're nocturnal birds and are largely inactive during the day. As this one rested in Eternal Meadow, the Cemetery's green/natural burial section, a small crowd of enthusiastic birdwatchers gathered to photograph the bird from a distance so as not to risk disturbing it.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, both the Dia de los Muertos celebration and the Tree of Life/Holiday Open House at Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum & Mortuary are cancelled this year.
