: ! We are excited that the County has allowed museums to reopen and are working toward opening our doors back up for tours. However, many of our docents are at higher risk of COVID. Because the health and safety of our docents is of utmost importance, we have chosen to delay our reopening until we find enough docents comfortable and interested in providing tours. We thank you for your understanding.... If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, have an avid interest in aircraft or aviation history, or are interested in learning about aviation, and don’t mind working with the public, please consider volunteering at the Wings of History Museum. We will be following county guidelines for COVID prevention. Volunteer docents work in pairs and are expected to work at least one 5-hour weekend day per month (11:00am-4:00pm). The position entails collecting admission, answering questions, providing guided tours, and some cash register work, no experience necessary. We are in need of a total of 10-12 docents to open our doors on Saturdays alone and will need more to open Sundays and weekdays. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up at https://www.wingsofhistory.org/cm-volunteer-2/
We don't know yet when we'll be able to open, but we are continuing the upkeep at the museum with volunteers this last Saturday helping to keep the displays and grounds ready for visitors. Work also continues at the prop shop with wood being prepared to create a new propeller.
Still working behind the scenes to improve the museum as we wait to be able to reopen. Soon to be on display at the Wings of History: a 65hp O-145 Lycoming restored by Paul Agialiotis.
The museum recently acquired a rare and historical Wright Whirlwind model J-5A-B (R-790) air-cooled 9 cylinder radial engine. The engine was acquired to supplement our Lindbergh display as the aircraft he flew (Ryan Spirit of St. Louis) across the Atlantic in May 1927 was powered by an engine like it. The engine first introduced in 1925 for the intermediate power range market produced 220 hp at 1800 rpm and was quite advance for its time. Developed by the Wright Aeronautical ...Corporation from its Lawrance J-1 engine, the J-5 was the first engine to have sodium-cooled exhaust valves and to be self-lubricating. These innovations greatly increased its reliability. The J-5 won the prestigious Collier Trophy for 1927. The engine was used by both the Navy, Army and commercial aircraft in the mid 1920's to the late 1930's. Over 950 engines were produced from 1925 to about 1938 both in the US by the Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Paterson, NJ and under licence in France and Poland.
While we are closed to the public due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, we are still working behind the scenes in improving the museum. We recently acquired a rare and historical item related to one of the most famous airplanes in aviation history. It will supplement one of our existing displays to further tell the story of an amazing feat. Images of the "unboxing" coming soon!
Due to the ongoing situation regarding COVID19 and concern for visitors, the museum will be closed through the end of April. We will be continuing to monitor public health directives and update accordingly.
