What Groovy Eats

Today will be the end of a 10-Day DIY Menu "challenge" I am doing for Groovy's meals. Over the next few days I'll be calculating and inputting all the things she ate over a unplanned 10-day period as a spontaneous snapshot of her #diyrawfeeding #balanceovertime menu to get as much nutritional analysis information as possible Unfortunately a lot of what I feed is not available in nutritional databases or studies/research, and most information is incomplete or lacking key inf...ormation/analysis on: calcium, taurine, omega fatty acids/fats, heme iron, preformed vitamin A, K2, vitamin D, folate, copper/zinc. Can you see where this can get a little tricky when the data input into an analysis tool isn't complete or an accurate reflection of the actual ingredients used or being consumed by your pet? Alas, we do our best. I'll be curious to see the results which I'll gladly share here and on the @sfraw #sfraw pages This was last night's meal and shows a lot of things Groovy gets pretty often/in her regular rotation, as well as one new thing #rawsheepmilkcream I just started adding this recently. I'm so pleased to see her enjoying it SO MUCH and about a week on, we're witnessing some body changes along with it - more interesting than concerning - anal glands expressed/skinky yuck yesterday, and one episode of diarrhea day before, but she's been ok otherwise. These are both possible indications of a "shift" in her gut microbiota population/flora, and I'm ok continuing to see what this does for her longer term. So long as she seems otherwise normal, and with just very mild/minor symptoms like this - nothing chronic, nothing upsetting to her/us - and it's not her usual dramatic negative reaction to dairy that she's had in the past. I will try camel milk kefir next...we'll see how she does. She's a little fat right now too, so she fasted the night before (the day she had diarrhea). Groovy's tendancy is to get fat, not thin - sometimes she needs a reduction in her food and I adjust accordingly, as needed. Serving Suggestion using #sfrawsourcedingredients DIY Raw Feeding Menu #balanceovertime Over the previous few nights, Groovy has enjoyed one very huge turkey carcass bone (very boney!), SFRAW Lamb Grind & Beef Grind (returns) served with lamb and turkey necks plus raw cod livers. ... Last night she enjoyed the following #lickedthebowlclean Rockfish Fillet Cubes Lamb Green Tripe (this piece was mostly fat, not as much green stuff) Beef Tongue (underside piece) Duck Egg Seaweed Blend Beetroot Powder She swollwed the entire piece of lamb tripe in one single gulp; after which she had to take a moment to compose herself/breathe. Licked up the egg and beetroot, popped down a rockfish cube, then swallowed the entire beef tongue piece whole after just a very brief moment of a chomp/chew, then she needed another moment to take a breather. She proceeded to finish off the cubes and licked the bowl clean. I don't menu plan, instead I shop every few days. Often Groovy will get returned product (when available), and we take home samples to inspect/review our fresh Grinds made every week. She gets oddball pieces, anything irregular/still edible, mistakes, bags with holes, etc. She also gets to help sample all the new/latest and greatest things. Balancing over time means I look at her meals daily & over a period of about a week. Then, I consider all meals served over the course of a month. For last night's meals, I added the lean fish and duck egg to balance out the high fat % of this meal. I didn't know if the tripe was going to be fatty all the way through or just on the outside. Indeed, it was fatty all the way, so I added an egg and the rockfish on hand. Tomorrow, she'll get the other half of the fatty piece of tripe & the rest of the beef tongue which is always a high fat cut. So, the days after this, I'll feed her some leaner meals plus focus on including more calcium/mineral-rich cuts like skinless turkey/duck necks or whitefish bones plus more eggs. We get our fresh veggies/herbs delivered today, so she'll also get a puree or minced variety of parsley, dill, oregano, fennel, dandelion. @SFRAW #sfraw #whatgroovyeats

DIY Raw Feeding Meal #balanceovertime Serving Suggestion using #sfrawsourcedingredients Loving this new lengthway long-cut of the whole lamb necks! Pretty nifty. Groovy likes them whole, too but I took some home to try out.These would be a great option for any sized dog or cat (don't expect your kitty to get through the majority of this bone, but it's an outstanding way to provide meat meals "on the bone" as well as cartilage, connective tissue, marrow, etc. Leftover bo...ne would make a great kitty bone broth!) Groovy's meal last night featured our new Rockfish cubes which did not disappoint! She immediately pushed everything aside to pull those out first and obviously really enjoyed them! It was really cute. On her platter this evening - licked clean and pushed across the floor: Rockfish fillet cubes... Rabbit Grind (returned product that she, Bones & Briar were all very happy to enjoy!) Turkey Neck Venison & Elk Stew Meat Quail eggs Beet Powder Then she asked so politely to have more... she got about 1/2 lb of the beautiful uber lean ground wild Axis deer from HI that we've been sampling and that I was preparing for Branko's dinner. He had a burger duo platter along with Northstar Bison's nutritious Burger Blend (which is lean meat blended with liver and heart - great way to get organs in the diet!) Everyone shared some fun new things last night for dinner including: Bison "pizzle" (raw) - Groovy got about 3/4 of a single pizzle, ate it first, in one swallow/easy gulp, not a single bite even taken. Loved it! Bison spleen Bison lung (ate these both third - she loved the dehydrated lungs, so I'm glad to learn she loved them raw, too!) ... Wild Venison Stew Meat from a new venison producer that I'm sampling out. Super exciting new supplier (stay tuned!) This venison is INSANELY spectacular and she went crazy for it the moment she realized, immediately after the pizzle, she gobbled it right up. That's 100% loving it from all taste testers - we got a winner! So excited for our plans for this new, very special and unique meat. Fresh Thyme & Oregano (she likes!) Lastly, she got a pack of mystery meat from the freezer. We keep a box in the freezer at SFRAW of random stuff, things that we can't/I don't want to sell or other oddball things that fit into Groovy's menu and I brought it home this week. Making our way through. Most not labelled. This looks like it might have been Rabbit Grind (pethaps there was an oops/fell on the floor or was an odd collection taken off the auger...?) She liked! For several nights prior to this, she's had very bone heavy meals ofduck carcasses and giant oxails, so this was ok to be low bone tonight. No cod livers either - skipped because I just wanted to see how she did with all the new here plus the dehydrated bison lungs she loved! Not shown: Trying a new herbal supplement with her right now. It's too soon to provide meaningful feedback or my full reccomendations, but we'll see. Poor thing: her eyes really suffered from the recent smoke, and overall with a few weeks from lack of exercise. I noticed that this mildly caused an imbalance or change in her microbiome. These split turkey carcass bones are HUGE and awesome! I allowed Groovy to consume half one night, the remaining half on day two. Shown serrved here with her favorite favorite Raw COD LIVERS (gobbled and gone for straight away, as per every time so far) and stuffed with about a pound of Duck Hearts and another pound of Beef Trim.... The photo doesn't really show the scale of the turkey carcass bones. They're so cool. And we never get them! They're lovely and rare and ridiculously affordable.
