This. Hits. Hard. The inability to receive support from others is a trauma response. Your I don’t need anyone, I’ll just do it all myself conditioning is a... survival tactic. And you needed it to shield your heart from abuse, neglect, betrayal, and disappointment from those who could not or would not be there for you. From the parent who was absent and abandoned you by choice or the parent who was never home from working three jobs to feed and house you. From the lovers who offered sexual intimacy but never offered a safe haven that honored your heart. From the friendships and family who ALWAYS took more than they ever gave. From all the situations when someone told you we’re in this together or I got you then abandoned you, leaving you to pick up the pieces when shit got real, leaving you to handle your part and their part, too. From all the lies and all the betrayals. You learned along the way that you just couldn’t really trust people. Or that you could trust people, but only up to a certain point. Extreme-independence IS. A. TRUST. ISSUE. You learnt: if I don’t put myself in a situation where I rely on someone, I won’t have to be disappointed when they don’t show up for me, or when they drop the ball... because they will ALWAYS drop the ball EVENTUALLY right? You may even have been intentionally taught this protection strategy by generations of hurt ancestors who came before you. Extreme-independence is a preemptive strike against heartbreak. So, you don’t trust anyone. And you don’t trust yourself, either, to choose people. To trust is to hope, to trust is to be vulnerable. Never again, you vow. But no matter how you dress it up and display it proudly to make it seem like this level of independence is what you always wanted to be, in truth it’s your wounded, scarred, broken heart behind a protective brick wall. Impenetrable. Nothing gets in. No hurt gets in. But no love gets in either. Fortresses and armor are for those in battle, or who believe the battle is coming. It’s a trauma response. The good news is trauma that is acknowledged is trauma that can be healed. You are worthy of having support. You are worthy of having true partnership. You are worthy of love. You are worthy of having your heart held. You are worthy to be adored. You are worthy to be cherished. You are worthy to have someone say, You rest. I got this. And actually deliver on that promise. You are worthy to receive. You are worthy to receive. You are worthy. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to prove it. You don’t have to bargain for it. You don’t have to beg for it. You are worthy. Worthy. Simply because you exist. -Jamila White, @inspiredjamila -photo credit: Randy Orange

Life. It comes in chapters. Cycles.... Waves. The beautiful full moon tonight marks a new cycle. The summer solstice gives us a new season. With each new chapter we encounter characters. Some familiar, some not. And those chapters bring us fresh experiences. May the full moon and the beginning of summer bring you pleasant characters and happy experiences. Who knows? You might even catch a big wave!

Imagine how brave and determined that first person who decided to fashion a raft to cross a body of water must have been. And that was a seismic change. The Wri...ght brothers went to dangerous lengths to prove that heavier-than-air travel was possible. And that was a seismic change. Neil Armstrong gets the credit for being the first man on the moon, but he wouldn't have been without Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and thousands of Nasa technicians. But that, too, was a seismic change. There's a story about John Glenn's re-entry with Friendship 7; As the capsule was deflecting heat at a very specific angle, and he realized how dangerous the thing he was doing actually was, Glenn supposedly mused, "You know...every piece of equipment on this craft was built by the lowest bidder..." We progress by moving forward, but moving forward takes courage. And determination. And will. It's a new day, my friend. Go forward, and do something no one ever imagined could be done. I wish you a restful sleep and beautiful dreams.

Hi friends! I've been struggling with a lot of things lately, and I thought maybe writing them down and putting them out in the universe will help heal some em...otional wounds and maybe help others who may be struggling, also. I've learned a lot over the past few years. Some good things, some not so good things. But, I'm sharing them all. The good and the bad. No matter how good you are to some people, they will turn their backs on you. Don't take it personally. Just keep being good to people, but guard your heart a bit. You're the villain in someone's story. And that's ok. Everyone has their truth. Stick to yours and don't try to defend yourself. Your actions speak much louder than your words ever will. No matter how nice your pictures are, or how important the things you post are...some people just won't hit the like button. Because it's you. And the first thing people do when they are feeling a certain way about you, is stop liking anything you post. Post anyway. Share your pictures. And, your stories. They put a smile on someone's face. Not everyone has the same heart as you. (This one I still struggle with on a daily basis.) Just because you will do it for them, doesn't mean they will do it for you. And, it's unfair to both of you to expect that. You will be excluded. And, it will hurt. A lot. You'll never understand why. But, you will remember the pain of being left out, and you will make sure to include everyone so no one has to feel the way that you did. Your kids (or future kids) will be excluded. And trust me, that hurts even more. But, it's a great teachable opportunity. When you put good out into the world, good comes back. Call it karma, or whatever you want... but, it's true. If you are kind, kindness will flood your doorsteps. You can't be liked by everyone. No matter how hard you try, some people just won't like you. Sometimes it's from personal experience, sometimes it's from what others have told them. Once you accept that, life gets a lot easier. Friends come and go, unfortunately. It's life. Sometimes friendships you thought would last forever, end abruptly and you're left wondering why. Stop wondering. You're never going to feel satisfied with any answer they give you. Own your part in it, learn from it, and then close that door. That chapter has ended. Allow a new one to begin. A simple text just to see how someone is doing, can mean the world. Just to know someone is thinking about you and cares, can turn a whole day around. Send the text. No one owes you anything. Forgive even if you don't get an apology. You can't begin to heal while you're still holding on to the hurt. Let it hurt for a moment. Forgive, and let it go. You're going to be too much for some people. Too loud. Too opinionated. Too talkative. Those people will never get you. Find the ones who do... and love them hard! People are going to talk about you. Give them good material. Extend grace to those who need it. We all struggle sometimes. Life is tough. It's messy. And it's ugly at times. But, its also so beautiful. And exciting. And full of adventure. Chase them all! Be a light. Don't let anyone dull your shine. You never know who may be looking to you for a little bit of joy. Be that joy. Go outside. Go on a hike. Swim in the ocean. Try a new restaurant. Go somewhere you've never been. Look at the stars. Take the pictures. Watch the sunset. Take the trip. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake (or the tacos!) And, most importantly learn to love yourself. And forgive yourself for not being perfect. Perfect is boring

Dear Sangha, there is word beloved teacher Thich Nhat Hanh has stopped eating. There are a number of his monks traveling to him now in Vietnam to be in his pres...ence. Thay has been incredibly strong and vibrant following his stroke in 2014 and he will mark 94 years on October 11. A report from Plum Village on Sept 18th stated his health has been declining despite the best of care. Please join me and others in meditation for Thay. Plum Village has requested we sit or walk for Thay and offer forgiveness to others as a way to continue Thay's energy of peace. If we can sit and generate compassion for others and forgiveness we increase the being and the legacy of Thay. Thay taught us the next Buddha may be the sangha. Perhaps our mindful thoughts and actions now for him will bring that closer and help him to touch more lives than ever as he ends this incarnation. May Thay be peaceful now in his root temple and feel the love and gratitude from all over the world. See more
