Egyptian mythology The god Thoth, a god self conceived at the beginning of time. He is often represented as a man with the head of an Ibis or an ape. Thoth was a moon god who played an important role in the Osiris legend and the judgment of the dead in the Hall of Maat. Thoth was said to be mighty in knowledge and divine speech. The inventer of spoken and written language. As the lord of books he was the scribe of the gods and patron of all scribes. He is credited with invent...ing astronomy, geometry, and medicine. Thoth was the measurer of the earth and the counter of the stars, the keeper and recorder of all knowledge. It was Thoth who was believed to have written important religious texts such as The Book of the Dead. In this text, he appears in the Hall of Maat as a scribe holding a writing reed and palette to record the results of the weighing of the deceased's heart against the feather of Maat.

Cats! No, cats are real creatures, not myth. But they have inspired a lot of mythological stories about them. Many of you already know of the importance of cats in ancient Egypt. Egyptians started identifying the lions that roamed around their land with the Sun. They believed that at sunset, Ra, the Sun God, would die and descend through the underworld in the West, to be born again in the East, at sunrise. During the night, however Ra was always in great danger, as his enemie...s, headed by the great serpent Apophis would not hesitate to attack him, thus putting the whole Universe in danger. However, the lions would look unto the setting sun, and keep its rays in their eyes, for they, like domestic felines, have eyes that reflect in the dark. With that fire burning in their eyes, the lions would go forth and kill the serpents of the night.

Greek heroes are not "perfect" or "entirely good". For the Greeks, being a hero didn’t mean you saved a puppy or helped out an old lady. It didn’t even mean you had superpowers or were a crime-fighter. All ‘hero’ meant in Greece is that you were half god. The title 'hero' didn't have the connotations we put on it in our culture, and therefore didn't have the same pressures or expectations that we have. The idea of an imperfect hero is one that was new to my mind as a child, and now it is an idea that is dear to my heart.
