Villa Volunteers have been hard at work this month helping us keep spirits merry and bright! Over 50 people responded to our call for homemade holiday cards, sending us nearly 700 cards that are being passed out to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cards poured in from across the country to help combat the isolation our program participants have been facing this holiday season, and we could not be more grateful for such a response. Santa Claus came to spread holiday cheer at Villa! On Wednesday, the Villa School had a drive by gift giving event for our students. We are so grateful to employees at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and Stone Dean Law who continued their annual tradition of buying gifts for Villa School students. Though this year the logistics were a little more difficult due to COVID, the joy and the smiles on the students' faces were just as bright! And with Santa waving to all the cars and people passing by, the holiday spirit was spread far and wide from Villa Street. One thing that makes Villa Esperanza staff so good at what they do is their ability to find and nurture our program participants’ unique talents. Such is the case for Joe, a participant in our West Region ILS program, and his ILS coach, Ronnie. Joe is an excellent caricature artist, but had never thought of himself as particularly talented, until Ronnie started encouraging him. It was not hard to see that Joe had a hidden talent for art in general, and Ronnie helped him take it a step further. Together, Ronnie had Joe set up a website and a PayPal account for Joe in hopes that he would get caricature commissions. It did not take long for Joe’s new venture to prove successful, with the commissions rolling in, just in time for the holiday season! #VillaTalent #VillaILS

For the past several years, Villa’s Adult Day Program (ADP) has held a Holiday Boutique selling holiday decor, baked goods, candies, and more that are created and donated by ADP participants, staff, and family members. This year the ADP staff went virtual with their first ever Zoom Holiday Boutique. As always, the items sold were creative and fun there were LA sports team-themed bottle openers (go Dodgers and Lakers!), wreaths, wreath holders, ornaments, caramels, and more. Looking for the perfect gift for the holidays and a way to support employment of individuals with development disabilities at the same time? The Pasadena Civitan Club is hosting a fundraiser with Terri Lynn’s candy company, selling nuts, candies, fruits, and more for the holidays! Villa wants to send a huge thank you to the volunteers that helped get us ready for today’s school Halloween Parade. Local volunteers pitched in to help by making cute signs and banners to greet our students as they drove by. The decorations were so creative and colorful, they helped brighten up our street and get everyone into the mood to celebrate! Happy Halloween! Even during a time of social distancing, Halloween is an event that cannot be missed at Villa Esperanza Services! Programs across Villa are celebrating this week, including our staff and clients in the West Region, which held a drive-by Halloween celebration earlier this week. Clients and their families dressed up for Halloween parade and received goodies from waiting staff. Happy Birthday to the Civitan Club of Pasadena, which turns 92 today! Civitan was a founding member of Villa Esperanza Services 60 years ago and helped us get our first school house. To this day, Civitan remains an important ally and continues to advocate for children and adults with special needs.
