The auction is live!
All participating artists were sent an empty sardine can to create a piece for this collabo- rative exhibition. During this unprecedented time of isolation, artists are finding new ways to participate in collaborative experiences and are finding new ways to interact with each other through sharing ideas, and delight in our uniquely different approaches for envisioning and creating art. Given a starting point of something as simple as an empty (mostly clean) fish tin, here are 22 pieces of art made for ‘If Can-can do! Auction is LIVE: https://hac.betterworld.org/auctions/ifcancando Music Can -Can played by Offenbach composed by Johann Strauss
For all those, that this message will reach...The transition from fear to hope is beginning while we adjust and adapt to our new reality. Rediscover your thoughts, truth and connections, be grateful for those who have made sacrifices and cherish what you have. Be aware of the immense possibilities that this pandemic should awaken in all of us. Learn, live, love, grow and do not postpone now.
During the influenza pandemic 100 years ago there could have been an effort to create an auto-mechanical ventilator to assist in breathing. In the event of critical illness, this would be especially useful for musicians needing disease containment while making a living, and staying alive during difficult times. This ‘Ventilodium’ was inspired by the worldwide CoVid-19 pandemic of 2020, and the initial shortages of medical ventilators available to those in need. Paul Schürch and Kelly Johnson created this from an antique German rosewood accordion, modified it, added a leather mask, fittings, pressure tubing and tri-whistle cough relief valve to make a device able to sustain the lungs, as well as the musical spirit. Keep Calm, and Play On!
This project took well over one year to construct, was the biggest Pietra dure panel I have ever attempted on my own.
This piece was collaboration between two shops, where we did the veneer work here in Santa Barbara, and the casework was done by Steve Balter in Seattle, WA. Click below to see the process.

his marquetry series of the Palm were created using two veneers, Hawaiian Koa and Sen (Island Ash). Each of these 4 panels are different from each other, and both Day Palms and Night Palms have some kind of curiosity built into the piece that makes it humam. Oftentimes, my favorite part of furniture is the art. This Jewlery Armoire was especially fun.
Many moons past I made a collection of four game tables with matching chairs. Each set was constructed with different materials and influenced by different themes. This is Table #4, the only table still available, a mahogany game table with backgammon, chess and tic-tax-toe. The top has a morning glory flower vine motif, matching the two chairs. Material: mahogany frame with myrtle background, walnut burl, walnut, cherry, elm, holly, poplar, maple, tulipier, solid myrtle, 18...K gold accents and leather lined drawers. Finish: Conversion varnish and wax. Dimensions: Table: 22 x 40 x 30 Chairs: standard DM to purchase. See more
