Hello brilliant Bruins, and welcome to the second half of fall quarter! We are still knee-deep in midterm season, and many of us may even be starting our second round of midterms. Hello Bruins !! In this edition of #HumansofCAC , you will have the opportunity to chat with the staff members of CAC, learn about their passions, experiences, and more!! This week we are doing things a little different. We are happy to introduce a wonderful staff member from the McNair Research Scholars program. Introducing Dr. Liliana Islas, the assistant director of the McNair Research Scholars program at UCLA ! We will be live-streaming and chatting with you through F...acebook Live, at 10:00AM! Until then, here's a little more about Dr. Islas: My name is Dr. Liliana Islas. I am the assistant director of the McNair Research Scholars program at UCLA. My journey at UCLA started in 2006. I transferred with my then 4-year old from East Los Angeles Community College. I came in as a political science major, and later switched to women studies (and loved it!) with a minor in education. My minor in education gave me the language to articulate my educational journey, and allowed me to gain a greater understanding of educational access, inequality and the role race played in it. This led to my Master’s in education, and ultimately my PhD. My son is now 18, and our family has grown to a party of five. We have added my husband, 3-year old son, and 160lb great dane (who is basically a human and is my 3rd child). As a first-gen, low-income, underrepresented student and single parent for most of my educational journey, my passion to support students who have been institutionally underserved comes from an intimate understanding of the obstacles they face. Understanding how education has changed my life, my work with the McNair program vitally important.

Hello Bruins! As midterms are approaching, we wanted to share some tips for you to prepare for and ace those exams. 1. A great way to connect with your peers and help each other is by forming study groups. You can ask classmates before or after class, during Zoom lectures, post on your class’ group discussion board on CCLE, or reach out on a class group chat. Make sure to ask questions in Zoom chats! TAs and other students can answer your questions. 2. We know that attending ...office hours can be intimidating, but they are a fantastic way to clarify content and make connections with your professors and TAs. Remember, if you have a question someone else probably does too! 3. Setting specific dates and times to study for each class can help make the workload appear more manageable. Don’t forget to schedule in study breaks as well! 4.Right before your exam, tell yourself positive affirmations like I’ve worked hard and I am ready, even if you don’t completely believe it. Putting yourself in a positive mindset can help you conquer tough questions during the exam. 5. Remember, despite the pressure that comes with midterms, take care of your mental health. A great grounding technique that helps with anxiety is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. Grounding techniques help with turning away attention from thoughts, memories, or worries and focusing on the present moment. Try thinking of: 5 things you can see 4 things you can feel 3 things you can hear 2 things you can smell 1 thing you can taste
