Here is a great presentation coming up in April from Polk County Health Services! "Tasha Brown, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of New York. Dr. Brown specializes in providing clinical care to children, adolescents, and young adults. Specifically, she focuses on providing Parent Management Training (PMT), Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and is a certificated Level 1 trainer in Parent - Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Dr. Brown is committed to pr...oviding empirically-based care to children, youth, and families living in vulnerable communities. Dr. Brown is a clinician in the School Based Program and Instructor of Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Brown provides clinical supervision to doctoral-level students, postdoctoral fellows, and staff in Parent - Child Interaction Therapy. Dr. Brown has published work related to Parent - Child Interaction Therapy, depression prevention for adolescent girls, and school consultation. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Brown believes it is part of her duty as a clinician to speak publically about the various ways in which children and youth are undoubtedly impacted by socioeconomic dipartites and systemic racism. As such, she regularly speaks and provides trainings to community groups, religious institutions, and corporate entities. She is excited about what can happen when we all as a collective work to improve the lives of our children, youth, and communities." https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-to-talk-about-race-with-yo

"Of the many inequities brought to light by COVID-19, the disparities that BIPOC students face in the American education system have proven to be the most compl...ex. Creating an inclusive and anti-racist educational experience that helps students achieve their full potential is made even more difficult in the virtual classroom. To provide their expertise on equitable education, three education leaders will speak at INFORUM on the challenges and opportunities offered by online schooling. They are Dr. Shawn Ginwright, professor of Africana Studies at San Francisco State University; Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammel, superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District; and moderator Dr. Alison Briscoe-Smith, director of diversity, equity and inclusion at the Wright Institute Clinical Program." https://www.commonwealthclub.org//building-anti-racist-cla https://commonwealthclub.secure.force.com/ticket/

Our own Dr Brandi Hawk spoke to CBS13 with some strategies for COVID-19 anxiety and children! Watch the video interview at the link below. "[Dr Brandi Hawk] rec...ommends parents do not avoid conversations about the pandemic. That may make them feel alone and dependent on themselves to get through the pandemic. Parents should validate their child’s fears, let them know it’s understandable they’d be afraid of the virus, and find an activity that helps your child relax and feel safe. While some kids will bounce back quickly, others may have a tougher time. For other children, they’re going to be anxious and it could take potentially months for them to truly feel comfortable being back in a normal life, said Hawk. The National Child Traumatic Stress Network posted a children’s book addressing COVID-19 fears in an effort to aid parents in helping their children cope with the pandemic." https://sacramento.cbslocal.com//dont-want-to-leave-their/

¿Hablas español? Calling all Spanish speakers! Dr. Jose Cholula from the PCIT Spanish Coalition has created a monthly SurveyMonkey to collect different ways of translating Spanish words, and he needs your help! If you are a Spanish speaker, please participate in these 2-3 minute surveys, and share with anyone who could participate as well. Your involvement in this project is greatly appreciated! The SurveyMonkey is for the creation of a glossary; it provides 3 words used ...in PCIT and asks for other ways of saying them in Spanish. Each monthly survey has 3 words for translation. From SchoolHouse Connection: https://register.gotowebinar.com/regist/3295940446040714768 Hosted by: U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), U.S. Representati...ve Don Bacon (R-NE) Moderated by: SchoolHouse Connection Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, public schools identified 1.5 million homeless children and youth, preK-12, and the U.S. Department of Education estimated that another 1.4 million children under age six experienced homelessness. The coronavirus outbreak has created barriers to their education and survival beyond the already grave effects of homelessness, while also threatening to dramatically increase the number of children and youth who experience homelessness. School building closures and distance learning have been particularly challenging for children and youth experiencing homelessness, who also are disproportionately students of color, students with disabilities, and English learners. This Congressional briefing will feature a panel discussion among four local educational agency homeless liaisons charged under federal law with identifying children and youth experiencing homelessness, and ensuring their enrollment and support. Learn about the struggles and strategies of educators to identify and support these students and families, and their urgent needs including funding for the McKinney-Vento Act’s Education for Homeless Children and Youth program and for community organizations in the Emergency Family Stabilization Act (H.R. 7950, S. 3923). Panelists: 1. John Bright, Homeless Education Coordinator/Resource Facilitator, Omaha Public Schools, Nebraska 2. Ayesha Buckner, Homeless Liaison/Parental Involvement Specialist/Foster Care POC, New Orleans Public Schools, Louisiana 3. Antonio Lewis, McKinney-Vento and Foster Care Liaison, Highline Public Schools, Washington 4. In 1975, Cree singer Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person to make regular appearances on @sesamestreet. But, before she agreed to participate, ...she asked the producers: have you ever done any Native American programming? As @missandreawarner writes in her biography of Sainte-Marie, "they hadn’t, but they called her back with a new offer to include her as a writer and contributor and appear as a semiregular cast member. She knew it would be a good opportunity to reach millions of young children and their parents with the same message she had been bringing to her concert audiences for years: 'Indians exist'. In an era with almost no representation of Indigenous voices in mainstream media, Buffy showed kids and parents alike the strength and pride of Indigenous People and culture. And, initially, her character was the only adult on Sesame Street that could see Snuffleupagus, which was part of her bond with Big Bird. Hear music to celebrate Indigenous Kids, and a special song from @buffybuffy1963 down on Sesame Steeet, Sunday at 8PM on @cbcradio.
