Summer is here + the humidity visits from time to time. We are finally getting out of the house + starting to reunite with those we haven’t seen in months, maybe longer. This means some of you are likely considering keratin treatmentsfor what seems like a good reason. For many, they're a dream come true (smoother, frizz-free hair and no fighting your strands in the morning!). For others, they’re still a source of confusion, from the potential health risks to the process to t...he outcome. The reason for the confusion, in part, is the fact that the term "keratin treatment" actually encompasses a range of formulas, application processes, and results. (Some "keratin treatments," for example, saturate the hair with a formaldehyde solutionyes, formaldehydebefore the hair is dried and flatironed. The solution locks the hair straight so it stays smooth.) Read on to learn the truth about keratin treatments so you can decide whether to get one and what other options you might have. "Keratin treatment" is something of a misnomer. The ingredients that actually matter in permanently breaking the hair's bondsammonium thioglycolate and sodium hydroxideare just harder to pronounce. Others, such as methylene glycol, formalin, methanal, and methanediol, release formaldehyde when heated or mixed with water. The high heat of a flatiron, used at the end of the process, accelerates the cross-linking of hair bonds. Some treatments dictate a waiting period before washing your hairallowing cross-links to fully set. So why am I sharing all of this information with you? Because each + every service that is performed by TWIG is researched to the max. When we opened our salon in 2009 we took a stand by not participating in these treatments.
