Parenting tip of the week: Redirect behavior and use positive reinforcement. Rather than trying to force good behavior through punishment, fear, and shame, redirecting behavior and positive reinforcement are much more effective and helpful for children with #ADHD or executive function challenges. If poor behavior is occurring, try verbally explaining why the behavior isn’t positive and redirecting to an acceptable behavior. ... You can also use non-verbal cues or gestures to redirect behavior, such as a gently touching the child’s shoulder when they get off task to help bring their attention back to the task at hand. Prompt positive reinforcement when the child makes a good behavior choice is equally as important. When a child keeps focused on their task, for example, offer praise or a reward.

Parenting tip of the week: Use visual habit-building tools. As your family works on reaching new goals and forming positive habits, whether it’s a fitness routine, finishing homework before dinner, or other responsibilities, a visual tool placed in a high-traffic area of the home can be helpful. For many kids, and especially those with executive function challenges, the visual reminder to work on those goals each day as well as physically marking a goal as complete for the day will increase the likelihood of achieving those goals.

For #ADHDAwarenessMonth, we are highlighting an important and often overlooked topic: Adult ADHD. What is a comprehensive treatment plan for adults with ADHD? According to Dr. Ari Tuckman, a psychologist, author, and speaker specializing in ADHD, "ADHD in adults is best managed with a combination of medication, learning about ADHD, therapy and/or coaching. We need to address both the brain wiring and also the psychological impact of living with ADHD."

Meet the TCS Family: Emily Slater, Administrative Assistant. My name is Emily Slater and I am currently the Administrative Assistant here at The Children's School. I graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Being part of the administrative team here has given me the opportunity to truly see how big of an impact our team makes in these families lives. Seeing the change we make in individual kids and families as a whole is why I love being a part of this program. When I am not at TCS I love to spend time with my family and friends, as well as being outdoors on hikes or playing sports, and obviously spending time with my puppy Rufus.

Parenting tip of the week: Use prompts instead of commands. Prompting your child to think critically about what they should do is not only often better received, but also encourages independent behavioral change and can build executive function skills. For example, instead of using the command Go put your shoes on, we are about to leave for school, try prompting instead. You look just about ready to leave for school in a minute. What else do you need so that we can go?

What can be done to help individuals with ADHD make healthier choices? Increasing the attractiveness and convenience of such foods as well as healthy food advertisements are actionable and effective steps in the right direction.

Parenting tip of the week: Make changes to situational behavior factors. What situations or activities are antecedents to your child’s unwanted behaviors? How can these be changed or removed so as to help them be more behaviorally successful? For example, before or after school care can be very tiring for some children and result in behavioral outbursts.
