What Matters: One Step at a Time Passing In inner quietness, slowly listening to hear the right word, I am obeying certain conditions. Shall I take this road or that? Shall I respond to this call or await another? ~ Roberto Assagioli ... Wherever we are in our lives: in a day, in an engagement, in a single moment, we have only one step to take. It is the next step and it is the now step. Mindfully, we walk down a slippery road. Mindfully, we climb a steep incline. How often do we take next steps mindlessly, unconsciously, impulsively or habitually? What happens to our lives, inner and outer, if we bring our consciousness, our awareness and will to bear on our next steps? Late, can I be at peace? Confused, can I trust? Frightened, can I smile? Being aware, mindful and conscious, gives us choice, regardless of the circumstance. And choice takes us home to our own Self, to our wisdom and to our power, to awareness and will, to the Call of Self. Join us on Monday, February 15, for this one hour webinar beginning at: 9 am PT; 12 noon ET; 5 pm UTC Read more and register at: EventBrite - https://whatmattersonestep.eventbrite.com [email protected]

As we enter these last days of the holiday season and of 2020, be sure to take time for both celebration and rest/relaxation: Every muscle, every nerve, relaxes, rests. Rest. Complete rest-perfect relaxation. As the body, so the mind relaxes, rests. All ordinary mental activity gradually stops. Your emotions are quiet. A sense of relief, of release pervades you. Deeper and deeper rest.Complete relaxation - physical - emotional mental. ~Roberto Assagioli, handwritten note Archivio Assagioli

The true spirit of democracy is the elimination of all external privileges of birth, cast, etc., is an equal opportunity for all at the start; it includes the fundamental freedoms. But it does not imply the denying of human differences of quality, of level among human beings; it does not go against the evident principle that the best rule is the rule of the best! " Psychosynthesis is a branch of Psychology developed by Roberto Assagioli in the early 20th Century. Assagioli created a series of maps and models with the purpose of guiding us through our conscious and unconscious to understand ourselves and synthesize our psyche. Psychosynthesis Coaching is applying those maps and models in a practical way to help us navigate everyday life coming from a purposeful place. I have a deep love for living things and nurturing them - living w...ith three cats and a growing indoor jungle. Plants have been helping me cope with this new way of life; taking care of them focuses my attention on something beautiful." ~ Marcela Andaluz Marcela is a psychosynthesis life coach whose practice specialties include: Life Change, Women, HomeLife Management. On shifting perspective A couple of years ago my wife and I gave one of our sons a special Christmas present: a drone (I admit I also had a certain interest in ...playing with it). He took it out and let it fly: it circled for a while above our heads, then obediently came back. Afterwards we saw the video of what it had recorded. It was the place where we live, and nearby. We saw our house from above, the streets, the cars, the trees, the garbage bins; even ourselves, very small, looking up. It was a revelation. Everything looked so different! The scenery was silent, and seen by a neutral, non-participating, non-judging eye. It was from a novel point of view. The same everyday scenery now looked mysterious and dreamlike. I could see things that were usually hidden from street view; I could see the work of humans and the work of nature intermingling with each other. There was a quality of serenity and detachment. Our everyday worries and squabbles did not reach there. I thought that must be similar to the way the Self sees our everyday life: a larger pattern, a serene outlook, a greater knowing. I often think that psychotherapy work is about changing perspective. Helping people to take others’ point of view, or their own wiser part’s, or the perspective of the cosmos. To frame their reality in a way that is more spacious and more compassionate. When that shift happens, it’s beautiful. But often it does not happen, because we are all attached to our own perspective and implicitly believe it’s the only right one. So what can we do to change that? What can we do to enable the shift, so that it comes smoothly and gives us a flexibility which (now more than ever) is the saving grace of our life? There are actually many conditions that facilitate this shift, such as wonder, altruism, play, sacredness, and others. Even suffering (not looking for it, but making good use of it when it comes). There are several ways of ungluing from a perspective that we are stuck in. Children up to a certain age (around six) have difficulty seeing the world from another point of view. A four-year-old child will not be able to conceive that I cannot see the picture on the wall that he sees behind me, and that he cannot see the trees through the window I see behind him. At some point children become able to mentally transcend their own viewpoint. That’s essential for living in our everyday world: you cannot even cross the street without it. I believe our life is a series of transcendence episodes. If all goes well, we learn to transcend our views, our immediate advantage, our ambition, our convictions. At least some of the time. Otherwise we become encapsulated in ever thicker layers of immobility. The ultimate act of transcendence is spiritual. Going beyond our concept of time, of the projects we have for ourselves and our loved ones, of our identity and life on earth. Flexibility comes in handy in these tasks. We move from one perspective to another. It’s about empathy. It’s about inner freedom. It’s about good will too. It’s not always easy to do it. Sometimes it may be humbling. But it is always freeing, to go beyond stereotypes, old mental habits, and our instinct to hold on. It is also ethical. Some time ago I participated in organizing a conference which was part of the Elephant Encounters. You will instantly understand what that means if you recall the story of the blind people and the elephant. What is an elephant? A flat surface like a fan (the ear), a column (a leg), a tube (the trunk), or a rope (the tail)? The story was probably invented by the Jain to communicate that in describing the world everybody has a different point of view, and each is valid, and that’s where tolerance and peaceful coexistence come from. That was the doctrine of anekntavda. The truth comes from putting all our points of view together, by comparing and joining them, rather than competing and setting each one up as the only truth. In the Elephant Encounters people from different backgrounds would describe their viewpoint on a subject (the first subject we dealt with was caring). Perspective change is of course the key to problem solving. At the beginning of last century Roberto Assagioli wrote a short piece about four ways to solve problems: you dis-identify from them; you talk about them with a friend; you interpose some time, and so give yourself a chance to reconsider; you ask your own Self, and wait for an answer. These are all ways of changing perspective! He later used another one: be the Self, because that’s who you are. And have a look from that viewpoint. When I was working with him, at some point one of my many resistances was, I don’t want to go around and just routinely repeat to everybody your ideas. I want to create my own ideas (yes, big ego). His answer was, please feel free to do that. It’s not about you and me, however, it’s about ideas; every time you see value in an idea and present it to others in your own way, you make it new, you give it your own slant and you put your own energy in it. He gave me an interesting article of his about eight meanings of the word new, which directly has to do with shifting viewpoints. Newness is a spiritual quality that is, or should be, very much part of our life and work. It is the opposite of stale, fixed, crystallized. We need it like oxygen. We long for it like we long for love or beauty. We can learn to create it. It often consists in taking a new viewpoint, a novel way of thinking. And when it comes, it is like a breath of fresh air. In the early days, when COVID-19 first became a pandemic and we began taking measures to slow the spread, Dr Ilona Kickbusch, a Global Health expert, advised: We need to change language - we need physical distancing NOT social distancing we actually need to increase our social cooperation. This is a reminder that we must continue to be mindful in keeping physical distance, while staying socially connected and cooperative.... We can do this!

What is synthesis? The word algebra comes from an Arabian word al-jebr which means: the reduction of parts to the whole. The word jabara, from which it is derived, signifies: to bind together (Webster). Algebra has therefore as its basic function the binding together, or correlating or integrating of elements into a formulated whole. Rudhyar, Astrology of Personality, p42." ~ handwritten note from Archivio Assagioli ... ... ...... Roberto Assagioli was deeply influenced by many of the spiritual thinkers, philosophers, artists, scientists, educators, practitioners, etc of his time. Among these, was, Dane Rudhyar, a humanistic astrologer, composer, artist and author. A simple Google search can offer a variety of resources about the relationship between Assagioli and Rudhyar. A fun fact for Synthesis Center San Francisco: born in France, Rudhyar moved to the US as an adult, becoming a naturalized citizen and lived in California and San Francisco until his death in 1985. ...there are no problems, situations, quarrels and conditions which cannot be solved by the will-to-good. Goodwill nourishes the spirit of understanding and fosters the manifestation of the principle of cooperation. The cooperative spirit is the secret of all human relations and the enemy of competition. ~handwritten note by Roberto Assagioli from ‘The Coming World Order’, p 14, at Archivio Assagioli As we enter a time of surging COVID in many places of our shared world: Remember a way to take care of others, take care of self: please remember to wear a mask!
