The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is currently soliciting comments from surgeons nationwide as to whether total knee arthroplasty (TKA) shoul...d be removed from a list of procedures that can only be performed in an inpatient setting. If TKAs are removed from this list, CMS will allow the procedure to be performed in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Patient selection will be left up to the surgeon and the patient. If you support this change, we urge you to send a letter to Acting CMS Administrator, Andy Slavitt indicating your support. COA has prepared a sample letter for you to send. "SURGICAL WIZARD Injured my right knee and could not ski and walking was limited to about 40 minutes with pain.Dr Ryu had me get X-rays and MRI done. He then clearly defined the problem using the images taken of my knee and explained how he would approach the arthroscopic surgery.... After surgery I literally had no pain and he clearly described in detail the post-op actions I should take including physical therapy. Hard to believe but my knee is as good as it was before the injury. He is extremely efficient, punctual and organized and will take as long as it takes to answer any questions you have. However, he is a surgeon, not a psychologist, and once he has conveyed the necessary information and answered your questions there is no more to say.As one reviewer said; if you want a friend get a dog."
