Today LIBROS collaborated with City of San Diego Parks and Recreation, St. Charles Catholic School, Sweetwater Secondary School and South Bay Recreation Center ...to engage in a Book to Action program involving community cleanup and art activities! Thank you to all the organizations and the individuals that participated in the event to make it a success! The San Diego Union-Tribune was on site to learn more about the program. Youth collaborated with the Recreation Center by weeding, raking, and picking up litter. After the cleanup, we convened in the courtyard for a brief discussion about the importance of drastically reducing single-use items like water bottles and utensils, for example, because we don't want these items to wash up in our oceans. The students contributed to the discussion by identifying items and strategies for reducing and/or recycling them. Next, Leslie introduced the Chihuly-inspired art activity, a play on the famous blown-glass pieces. Instead of stained glass we used recycled water bottles, colored them in with multicolored Sharpies, cut them into spirals, and then combined bits of twine and repurposed plastic bags to make fantastic jellyfish and other bioforms! We will display the creatures at a curated event in late spring and the community will be invited to join us. Our next cleanup event will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2020 and it will take place in the Otay River Valley. Details forthcoming. Special thanks to Leslie McNabb, Internship and Work Readiness Program Coordinator and LIBROS Treasurer, Kristina Fraijo, Citywide Volunteer Coordinator, City of San Diego Parks and Recreation and participating staff, and the youth of the South Bay Community. Book to Action is a framework that takes the basic book club concept and expands it to create a dynamic series of events for adults and intergenerational groups. Librarians work closely with a community partner to develop a series of programs. Community members read and discuss an engaging book on a current topic, attend author or speaker events, and put their new-found knowledge into action by participating in a community service project or civic engagement activity related to the book.
