Last year, a local high school student Sulmi featured Sisterhood Gardens for her final project. Sulmi illustrated a comic about our growing community. It is wonderful to read it again so I’m sharing with you (especially folks new to our page). So many students and interns have been an integral part of our journey! #grateful good luck with your finals!

Plant Story Time from Tiffany Ng . My favorite way to learn about plants is through story sharing from people and PEPINO DULCE, sweet melon, Solanum muricatum, and (translates to ginseng fruit) is one surprising plant ally to remember more recently. In September, my grandma brought over cuttings soaked in water as a housewarming gift. Grandma said the fruits are good for your health. I didn’t think the cuttings would form roots and mindlessly stuck it in the ground and i...t survived. A few weeks later, my mom returned home from her acupuncturist with pepino dulce fruits as a gifts. Again I learned that these fruits are good for your health by regulating blood sugar levels and by being a powerful diuretic, antioxidant and many more things listed that got lost in translation. Then Today, Mrs. Liu from Sisterhood Garden dropped by and asked to plant a (yun sum guo) on our hillside. Recognizing the leaf structure and not its Chinese name yet, I looked up the photo to confirm with Mrs. Liu what it is and we found a good home for it. What fascinates me about the pepino melon is that this plant has roots in the Andean mountains of Peru and somehow landed in China for cultivation as a medicinal plant. Over the years, I observed many other plants like rue and chayotes become part of this cross cultural experience. I want to learn more about their origin stories/ recipes and share back with my family and gardeners. P.S. while pepino dulce fascinates me, I actually don’t enjoy eating it. But I am committed to growing it to share with my people. Maybe it will grow on me

A giant virtual high five to all the gardeners, neighbors and supporters who dropped by to help out at the Build Day on Saturday. It was such a hot day and you all stretched yourselves to help us finish preparing the ground for our future greenhouse. We dug out and leveled so much soil!! We’re giving a big cheer to Nataliya, one of our dedicated Steering Committee Members who tends to our hillside/ fruit tree orchard area. She is passionate about medicinal herbs and fiercely fends the garden from gophers by building wire baskets around each plant. . I learn from her all the time. She taught me about the coolest yellow wonder alpine strawberry plant that we have as ground cover and yacón which is like a sweet potato with stems reaching high to the sky like . Recently, she pointed out a new addition, a CA sage brush (Artemisia californica) that she grew from seeds collected on a hike. What will Nataliya grow next?!

Wishing you all a happy Mid Autumn Fest this week. ! This is a time when people gather to eat a (reunion meal), harvest crops and celebrate the fullness of the moon/universe with some delicious moon cakes. We miss these type of gatherings at SG but it is still such a blessing to see you all at the build day in September. Check out some #tb photos of our 2019 gathering. Fun Fact: the lanterns we used were shared/recycled from my childhood. My siblings and I lit our lanterns and paraded around the block greeting neighbors along the way. May there always be light guiding us despite the smog, smoke and cloudy days.

We hope everyone in our community is staying safe during these uncertain times. Amid the smoke and the fog, our flower farm continues to share radiant flowers with garden members and the surrounding community. Delta sunflowers, Tithonia rotundifolia, zinnias, centurea, and agrostemma donated by @anniesannuals make up most of our summer blooms this season. @fogcitygardener has shared many bouquets from the farm with neighbors and elders in our community. Pumpkins, corn, and sunflower seeds are gradually maturing and hopefully will result in a successful fall harvest! Come by the garden and check out how much things have grown. What should we grow next year?
