SMC guide Michelle led an all-women's trip from Cottonwood Meadows to the summit of Mount Whitney and back. Together, seven ladies dodged one enormous marmot and some incredibly powerful lightning storms after getting off the summit, and just had a great time away from the guys. SMC is easing into reopening starting at the beginning of June. We are taking a reopening seriously and want to do it correctly protecting our staff and you as well. This has involved a lot of discussion and interaction with other professionals to feel our way down the best path. Here are some of our initial measures to deal with the pandemic: New background information and exposure information gathering (Sorry, this does mean more forms to fill out).... Lowering ratios and working with small groups. Guides will only heat water and not cook for the group. Guest swill bring their own quick to cook foods. Practicing social distancing when we can. This is pretty easy on trails, less easy on technical climbs but we have anticipated procedures for this. Wearing appropriate PPE when necessary and upping our hygiene and sanitizing techniques. Being prepared to change our thinking as new information becomes available. We are abiding by state, county and federal guide guidelines and are relying upon advice from our medical advisor. We have been approved for opening by Inyo County as of 5/27/20. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. We are looking forward to working through this process together, and to returning to the mountains this summer. Hi all, just an update as California moves into "Phase 2" and restrictions start to relax // SMC will be running small ratio programs in June once commercial permits become available. This means that we are going to keep ratios at 2 guests to 1 guide and assessing the ability to run larger group programs later in the summer. There will be updates to our paperwork and screening, our food/kitchen procedures, office and equipment sanitation, and the way we are managing sanitat...ion and health concerns in situations in which we cannot maintain distance between eachother. // We are doing our best to be honest and safe, and we ask that you do the same as we navigate opening our business under these new circumstances. Our tolerance for uncertain variables in the field will be lower, but we will continue to assess objective risk in the mountains with the same prudence we always have. We may choose to avoid some of those more extreme objectives we all have for the summer. // Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions, and please be patient as we find our stride in all of this. We are taking it day-to-day, and collecting information and feedback.
