Five Bridges is the end of the wild trout section. A lot of fly fishers concentrate their efforts in the catch and release section, especially gates 1 and 2. The entire wild trout section offers good fly fishing for the angler willing to explore.
@elisemini6 learning the finer points of indicator nymphing on the lower Owens River in between storms. The trout have been taking midge nymphs, midge emergers, mayfly nymphs, and stonefly nymphs. Overcast and freezing out there today.
Frosty morning on the upper Owens River.
Stormy days are suppose to be good for the blue wing olive hatch. The hatch has been sporadic at best. Nymphing continues to be the most productive method of fishing the lower Owens River. I’m using midge nymphs, midge emergers, pheasant tail nymphs, and stick caddis imitations.
Just want to give customers a heads up in advance:
The stoner nymph is my anchor fly in my three fly Czech rig. It produces the biggest fish of the day. I tie it in different weights so I can fish it it in different water flows so it keeps my rig moving in the bottom of the water column where the trout feed.
No snow and warm days mean easy access to the upper Owens River by anyone. Holiday crowds will be pressuring the fish this weekend. For fly fishers who throughly cover the water there are trophy trout to be caught.
If you don’t like the weather come back in half an hour. The morning on the upper Owens River started out at 24 degrees. By noon it had climbed to 55 degrees and sunny. By 3:00 P.M. the wind and clouds had moved in. Will we get the much needed snow that we need to provide water for our rivers and lakes?
Nymphing the lower Owens is producing wild brown trout and the occasional rainbow trout. Midges, midge emergers, and pheasant tail nymphs under an indicator are producing. Butano nymphs, walts worm, rainbow Warriors, and quill perdigons have been producing on the Czech rod. Mayfly hatches have been sporadic at best with very few fish feeding on the surface.
