Seashells are a sacred symbol, they've been known for thousands of years as a powerful sign of the Great Mother Goddess herself; the womb of Earth Mother. As a powerful symbol of the Divine Feminine the shell appears in many forms, just as the Goddess is known by many different names within cultural contexts: Virgin Mary 'Star of the Sea', Magdalene (who carried a cross decorated with shells on her sail to Marseilles), Isis (One Who is All, Madonna with Child). As Diana (hunt...ress/virgin Goddess of Childbirth) is associated with the Moon (ocean), other nomikers are Mamma Watta, Sirena, and 'Mother Whose Children Are Fish'. Whether called Goddess Oshun, Yemaya (Mother of Salt Waters) Mariamne, Venus (Scallop), Sofia (Sige), or a thousand other names, her presence is undeniable as thousands of her icons revering her Divine Feminine powers remain. As lady of Del Mar, this Mother Divinity is also asscociated with the conch shell (one of the oldest instruments) cowries (sacred Yoni) and spiral shells, which represent infinity. Seashells, as an icon, are a timeless symbol of feminine power. To adorn one's tresses with seashell decorations is in itself, an honor to this Great Mother.
