Tricking the Opponent's feet. Three uses for this concept. 1. As a throw 2. To pin the opponent's feet to the ground so they are helpless... 3. To keep the opponent slightly off-balance so they are helpless. Of course, while they are helpless you ruthlessly take advantage of that. There is always at least one direction in which the opponent has no strength. Same for you. If you just go for that direction it might work but there's a good chance it won't. They may adjust or they may grab and pull you down with them. So not a great idea. Instead you can get them to commit to stepping in a direction and then redirect towards to weak direction while they do. Because they are already committed they cannot adjust. So, in this case, they become off-balance and helpless. There are many variations and uses of the concept. This video is a brief explanation. Even so, it is enough to start working on and developing the skill Anthony Saine , who is one of my online students, asked me a question about a martial arts video he found. In the video, the idea of going toward the weak direction was presented. I wanted to expand upon that to show how it could be done without the risks mentioned above. This was my answer to him.

Beast Magic - Episode 1 - Mongoose Evasion In the Beast Magic series we take Shou' Shu' (Beast Magic ) demos and explain the nuances of what's going on. You wil...l: Begin to understand how 7 individual beast arts combine to become one art Begin to understand how the 3 principles are present in each and every move Shou' Shu' is a difficult art for the camera. It's subtleties go unnoticed. It has very little dramatic appeal. Its entertainment value is lost on most. It just gets the job done quickly. Which is what is truly needed in a fighting art. In this episode Shifu Matt Miller shows a Mongoose evasion followed up with a Tiger attack. Showing how the beasts are quickly transitioned through or combined to form an entirely new beast motion.

Disciples Workshop - Lesson 2 Six Inch Drills This is a simple drill that is great as a warmup. It not only develops the muscles needed for a horse stance but a...lso builds them in to muscle memory (pain is a great teacher that way) Note the discussion at the end about building up an internal brace. Whenever I do or teach this I am reminded of the scene in the pilot for the tv series Kung Fu. Where the young seeker stood outside of the temple enduring harsh weather and boredom while the others quickly gave up and wandered off. That scene had an impact on me even as a child. It speaks of the sacrifice that is necessary to get what we want. I heard it said recently that it is not the strength of your desires, it is what you are willing to endure to achieve them. What is your "WHY"? What are you willing to give for it? About the Disciples Workshop In this lesson series I am "teaching the magic". In today's world instructors rarely have the time to put in the finer details. Yet without them any technique is worse than useless. So, as a service to the martial arts community I'm documenting them in this series. This will mainly cover only one beast, the bear. That is because the principles of that beast are used in almost every martial art. So this should be helpful for anyone. Practice each lesson and slowly you'll start seeing how they all come together to form a strong foundation. The foundation you need to make your personal defense skills highly effective. #shengchi #kungfu #shoushu #disciplesworkshop

The Disciples Workshop - Lesson 1 - The Square Horse Teaching The Magic In this workshop, we are breaking martial principle down to its fundamentals. That's wh...ere the magic is "There is no magic in magic, the magic is in the details" ~Walt Disney My Grand Master always told me "Teach the magic" and that is what this series of lessons is about. Without the magic, martial arts becomes just techniques. No more than dance moves. But with it...well obviously...magical. Unfortunately, the magic seems to go missing a lot. We're going to fix that. In today's world, martial arts teachers are spread to thin. They are simply not able to "Teach the Magic". The rent has to be paid and that means taking on large numbers of students. What I found in running a school for 20 years is that over time the head instructor spends less and less time with the "Disciples". The hobbyist students require more work for the instructor and the "Disciples" end up getting less and less of the head instructors time. This is completely backward from the way it should be and leads to the loss of "The Magic". Since I retired from running a school I have committed to spend the majority of my time teaching the "disciples" . However, due to today's technology I can also deliver much of this knowledge to others as well. Certainly, there are more up and coming "disciples" that would like this knowledge as well. Or maybe even the casual student will find it useful in this format. Our goal is to spread the magic. To bring it back to the martial arts. And you can add this magic to any art. Follow along through each lesson and feel your skills develop. Every lesson in the disciple's workshop will be primarily from the first beast. The bear. This is because the fundamentals of the bear run through every art. It is the beast that we all have in common. Or for the beginner, it is the place to start. Bear first. Dragon last. The order in between doesn't matter. Enjoy! Salute SSW P.S. Why am I doing this? Because it needs to be done. Or the ancient fighting arts will be lost forever.

The history books that mention Cobra Kung Fu (Boli Yan She') say that it was lost many years ago. Turns out that's not true at all! Cobra was preserved by the T...ong. The teachers of it began migrating to the US in 1900. They taught the young men in the Chinese communities because these communities had no police protection. Eventually, these groups of protectors devolved into protection rackets. Such is the way with humans. But the good thing that came from that is the art was preserved. It was made illegal in China so lost there. From the stories, my GM told it was then taught in only a few cities in free countries. Thank God for freedom, without it this ancient knowledge would have never been preserved. The Tong preserved the art because it was useful to them. It gave them strength, as it still does today. My teacher learned it during the great depression. It was a rough world then and fighting skills were a major asset. I have a lot of gratitude for those that preserved it. Whether they were criminals or not. Judging them by their actions in a time we cannot understand is simply a waste of cognitive energy. The guys in this video are learning to be cobras. At this point they haven't even cracked their shells but I am confident that they will be Cobras one day. Here I'm introducing how to use the energy from a cobra punch to flow into an elbow. The cobra must use the push off energy. he has no legs so must use the opponent to energize his weapons
