Today would have been Iola Brubeck's 91st birthday. It was such an honor to be at this live event at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York this past April. Rewriting the narration for this particular performance of her 'ahead-of-its-time' jazz musical was Iola Brubeck's last known creative endeavor. She passed away two weeks before Wynton Marsalis produced her musical at JALC (overlooking Columbus Circle on Broadway). Iola was Dave Brubeck's wife and the driving force behind muc...h of his commercial success. They were a true partnership and together they created an amazing family and musical legacy. When you have a few moments, watch the magic I witnessed live--the Broadway musical she and Dave wrote for Louis Armstrong in 1960 after the newly racially integrated Dave Brubeck Quartet was sent to circle Russia in the early years of the Cold War to combat the perception of America as a racist society. Iola and Dave were light-years ahead of their time and already knew what the rest of America needed to learn. The musical debuted at the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival. Tonight at 8 pm ET, Sirius Jazz Channel 67 is replaying the Real Ambassadors. I saw this amazing musical live last week in NY. It was first performed by Louis Armstrong at the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival.
