ALERT: We just wanted to warn people about a scam going around... A client got a call and the person on the other end said they were from ICE in New Jersey. They said that they were investigating him and needed to know more about him. They asked how much money he had in his bank accounts and accusing him of having "dirty money". They demanded immediate payment and threatened immigration consequences if he did not pay. He told them that they should speak to his attorney, but t...hey refused. He hung up with them and called us immediately. The number he received a call from did in fact check out to be from ICE, but this was a scam. Immigration does not call you directly and tell you that you're under investigation. They especially do not call and ask about bank accounts and they do not demand payment from you. We informed him it was a scam and to ignore the call. Client was relieved beyond measure. DO NOT SHARE FINANCIAL OR OTHER SENSITIVE INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. ALWAYS INSIST ANY QUESTIONS BE ASKED THROUGH YOUR LAWYER. PROTECT YOURSELF.

2 major developments in the immigration world: 1. New Asylum rules making it harder to prove a claim have been finalized. This new rule makes it hard for those who did not come straight to the US and travelled through another country before filing for asylum. https://www.cnn.com//politics/immigration-asylum/index.html... 2. The Supreme Court allows Muslims put on no fly list to get damages (compensation). Creating financial repercussions to the government for their blanket stereotyping is a small step in the right direction. https://www.cnn.com//no-fly-list-religious-libe/index.html

IMPORTANT UPDATE: On August 25, 2020, a new rule that was initiated by President Trump's administration will become effective. The new rule will make it *much* more difficult for asylum applicants to obtain work permits while their asylum applications remain pending. For anyone who is considering filing an asylum application, it may be best to file well before August 25, 2020. Contact an attorney to help you through the process and ensure you apply properly and in a timely manner! Additionally, although the DACA program was upheld by the Supreme Court, the Trump Administration has said that it will not accept new applications, disregarding the Supreme Court entirely. However new legal challenges are being brought forth to challenge the Trump Administrations position. Stay tuned for updates as they come!
