When flood waters recede and rebuilding begins, we must not forget that many will struggle with mental health issues, said Harriet Wolfe, MD, president of the American Psychoanalytic Association. As psychoanalysts we are keenly aware of the effects of trauma and urge governmental agencies and local community leaders to earmark significant resources to assist vulnerable individuals, including first responders, as they work to recover from this traumatic event.

"We don’t do this to Cancer victims or to people with Heart Disease or those ravaged by infection. We don’t make fun of them, we don’t call them weak, we don’t question their choicesand we sure as hell don’t leave them alone to be overtaken by their illnesses. Studies measure relief of symptoms yet a crucial premise of psychoanalysis is that there’s more to a meaningful life than being symptom-free. In principle, you might even end a course of psychoanalysis sadder though wiser, more conscious of your previously unconscious responses, and living in a more engaged way and still deem the experience a success. Freud famously declared that his goal was the transformation of 'neurotic misery into common unhappiness.'"
