Where in the world!? Although we have all had to restrict our travels this year, one of the most recognisable paintings in the collection has been on its own It...alian odyssey! Early this year, James Barry's memorably titled Portraits of Barry and Burke in the Characters of Ulysses and his Companion Fleeing from the Cave of Polyphemus (c.1776) travelled across Europe for inclusion in the exhibition ULISSE. L'arte e il mito (Ulysses: Art and Myth) at the Musei San Domenico e Musei Civici - Forlì in Italy. To prepare for this loan, conservation work had to be carried out on the nearly 250-year old painting by the Cork-born artist. This entailed cleaning and consolidation of the paint layer, consolidation and retouching of the elaborate gilt frame and the addition of anti-glare, UV-resistant museum glazing. A museum standard crate was also commissioned for the artwork, which provided a buffer from vibrations and environmental changes during transit. All of this made it safe for this work to travel abroad for the first time since 2007! While the work itself travelled in a climate-controlled truck with a professional art transport agent and courier, our Interim Registrar Kathryn Coughlan journeyed to meet it by bus, plane and train to Forlì in the northeast of Italy. Her journey started at 5:30am in the midst of a storm, but luckily Kathryn spied rock duo Tenacious D on board the same flight, so at least if it was delayed there was sure to be a chance for some in-flight entertainment! Having overseen unpacking, condition checking, and installation of the painting in pride of place, Kathryn returned safely to Ireland and, although the exhibition was ultimately interrupted by the pandemic, Ulisse ai Musei San Domenico continues until 31 October. While looking forward to welcoming "Barry and Burke" back to their home by the Lee, we are delighted that they will return with more tales to tell in their already storied journey!
