The San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild 05.07.2021

We are pleased to present the 2021 San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild Summer Exhibition, juried by Anita Feldman, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Education at the San Diego Museum of Art. We were delighted by the overwhelming response. 2379 works from 892 artists from around the world were entered for consideration. Ms. Feldman had the difficult task of selecting 250 of the best pieces from this abundance of high quality submissions. Congratulations to all art...ists accepted. It is a pleasure to represent such a variety of artists of many artistic disciplines. All works are available for purchase through inquiry to [email protected]. Please enjoy the exhibition online gallery from June 8 to August 8, 2021 at https://www.sdmaag.org/2021-Summer-Exhibition. During the coming days, we will highlight the award winners and their works on the Guild FaceBook page.

Congratulations to Julianne Ricksecker! Her collagraph Solitude, which she showed at the Guild's June 12 Zoom meeting, was juried into the Guild’s 2021 Summer Online Exhibition. The 8 1/2" x 6 1/4" size collagraph is hand-printed by the artist on German Etching paper. The edition size is 25. Julianne tells us this about her work: "This brooding image of a lone Torrey Pine on a cliff overlooking the ocean was inspired by a stormy late afternoon hike. The image is created by... coating a mat board scrap with a sandy acrylic ground. If inked at that stage, it would print a rich black. Light areas are developed by applying acrylic grounds to fill in around the grains of sand and to create other textural areas that will hold less ink. Finally gloss and mat mediums are used to further control how the ink will wipe off the plate. The plate is inked and wiped in the manner of an etching and printed on damp paper on an etching press." Please enjoy the exhibition on the Guild’s online gallery https://www.sdmaag.org/2021-Summer-Exhibition through August 8, 2021.

"You Can't Run Forever....." is the first work new member Katerina Husar Lazarova shared with the many artists at the October 10 Virtual Artists Discussion. It is a 20 x 20" painting with an Acrylic background and ink drawing on canvas. In the artist's own words, "The background is created with acrylic colors from several thin layers of different colors, translucent and intertwining. The rabbit is an ink drawing, and it represents the effort to escape from something . There... is a free space in front of the rabbit, which suggests that there is room to escape or stop running. And his body posture, with the front paws almost touching the ground suggest that the rabbit is just finishing the jump. And now it's up to him to decide whether to make another jump or he will stop running. This painting was created last year and reflected my attempt to escape from back home. But the image is not just a representation of my effort to escape because sometimes we all try to escape from something, whether out of fear or dissatisfaction. And the image may evoke in the viewers' minds their stories when they tried to escape from something And the contrast that the observer stands without moving in front of the painting could allow the viewers to explore these personal stories...and facing them instead of escaping from them."
