Congratulations to Pete Ellingson for being our Volunteer of the Month! Pete first became involved with Save Mount Diablo 10 years ago. He had been identifying and logging native wildflowers on his hikes, and Save Mount Diablo seemed like a natural fit. Pete has been a part of Save Mount Diablo's ongoing project to preserve Marsh Creek. He's helping to clean the creek and restore native plants so wildlife can thrive.... Thank you, Pete, we couldn't do it without you! (Read more about Pete on our blog: http://ow.ly/g5LT50DI3Eu) #SaveMountDiablo #VolunteerOfTheMonth

From enormous fires that suffocate the sun, to rising temperatures, the effects of climate change are increasingly felt. But there's still time to act. There are seven cities across Contra Costa County that are updating their General Plans and Climate Action Plans, which means there are lots of opportunities to get involved.... Join this virtual climate workshop from the Greenbelt Alliance tonight at 5 PM to hear Contra Costa residents and grassroot organizations and learn how to make an impact in your community. Tesla Park should be designated as a non-motorized preserve to benefit both people and wildlife. Throughout the years, Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area has seen a sharp decline in usage. Opening Tesla Park to off-highway vehicle recreation will only serve a tiny and declining portion of the population. Tesla Park holds rare biodiversity, history, and Native American cultural sites. It can't be destroyed by OHV recreation. ... Show your support and tell Governor Newsom to act now! http://ow.ly/C41T50DC9u0 : Save Tesla Park #SaveTeslaPark #SaveMountDiablo #DiabloRange

In the northern tip of Richmond lies a shoreline that offers beautiful views of the Bay and a refreshing coastal breeze. It's a sanctuary for birds and to all who go there. This shoreline is now protected, largely thanks to a local heroWhitney Dotson. After World War II, many black residents were not allowed to move into certain neighborhoods. Temporary housing was torn down in Richmond. Parchester Village, located in northern Richmond, was designed primarily for black Amer...icans who were excluded from purchasing homes nearly everywhere else. The community enjoyed widespread access to a shoreline known as Breuner Marsh, where Dotson grew up looking for tadpoles and picking blackberries. After developers threatened to turn the shoreline into an airport, Dotson's father rallied the community together to fight the proposal. Dotson continued his father's work to protect and preserve Breuner Marsh. In subsequent years, there were proposals to turn the marsh into housing, an industrial park, and a transit center. In 2011, Breuner Marsh was purchased by the East Bay Regional Park District as an extension of Point Pinole Regional Shoreline. Dotson served on the Board of the East Bay Regional Park District from 2009 to 2019. Because he'd earned a master's degree in public health, he saw the connection between the lack of open space and a greater prevalence of health problems such as heart disease and diabetes in communities that have lower income. Dotson passed away in 2020, three years after the East Bay Regional Park District renamed Breuner Marsh as the Dotson Family Marsh in his honor. : Hillary Jones-Mixon #SaveMountDiablo #EastBayPark #DotsonFamilyMarsh #BlackHistoryMonth

The California towhee (Melozone crissalis) lives the Diablo region year-round. It loves tangled chaparral, but you could also find it in your backyard or neighborhood parks. You probably try to avoid poison oak every time you go outdoors, but that's not the case for the California towhee. It often builds its nest in it! This towhee is obsessed with chasing its reflection. You can often find it knocking at windows or car mirrors. It will often come back to these same spots to... keeping fighting its reflection. Have you seen the California towhee? Comment below! #FeaturedWildlife #CaliforniaTowhee #SaveMountDiablo #Preserve #Defend #MtDiablo #MountDiablo
