As ER Nurses we are constantly placed under physical, mental, and emotional stressors which can lead to exhaustion and burnout. It’s important to bring awareness to the impact COVID-19 has made on our departments, the healthcare system, and most importantly our well-being. We’ve been placed in a medical war zone; separating families from their sick loved ones at hospital entrances, back to back intubations behind closed doors, PPE shortages, sedation and paralytic medication ...shortages, vent shortages, nursing shortages, patients struggling to hold on, alone, in their darkest hours we have been there to witness the pain and suffering, and have provided empathy and compassion through all of it while putting ourselves at risk. If you are struggling with the stress of the pandemic whether it be for work or personal reasons please take a moment to remember that you are not alone and you can always reach out for help. Here is a list of resources to maintain a healthy mind and spirit: Employee Assistance Programs: Most hospital systems have an employee assistance program (EAP) which provides free confidential assessments, counseling, and referrals for long term therapy. Project-Parachute.org - offers individual therapy or group support for COVID-19 frontline workers. Care 4 Caregivers Now - connects front line caregivers with a trained coach offering remote and confidential sessions at no cost.
