The Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens is taking orders for bricks at the Kiwanis Triangle on the corner of Waring Road and Zion Avenue. If you have been searching for the perfect gift for special people in your life who have everything, why not honor them forever with a personalized engraved brick? Have a new graduate? A colleague who is retiring? A parent who raised you in Allied Gardens? A loved one who is no longer with us? Or even a beloved pet? What better way to... honor and/or remember them than by having a permanent brick installed in the heart of Allied Gardens? There are now over 500 commemorative bricks at this location. President Mark Schulze and VP Patricia Mooney decided to purchase a brick as a neighborly gesture, as we enjoy contributing to programs that aid children. 100% of the profits from this brick sale will go back to our community projects and for scholarships. The Kiwanis Club has a goal to ensure your brick will be installed in time for the holidays! * A special thank you to John Chandler for his help in locating our brick!

Hello neighbors! Happy Holidays from SCAC to you. We miss our meetings and are working on a holiday-party Zoom meeting. We'll let you know when and where. What have you been doing to pass the time during this nearly year-long Quarantine? We've discovered that being outside is the best way to stay healthy. We enjoy hiking and mountain biking out in the far reaches of San Diego East County. There are some amazing places to see. Please share your stories as well.

As you may be aware, the Census count will be ending tomorrow night (3am PST on October 16 to be exact) and we hope that if you have not yet completed it (takes a couple of minutes, very fast), then you will do this civic duty, as it translates to funding - money - for our community. Stand up and be counted! www.My2020Census.gov

For the past few weeks, Mayoral candidate Barbara Bry has been visiting San Diego neighborhoods to talk to community members about the issues affecting them. She came to Tuxedo Park in San Carlos this past Sunday, August 30th. Socially distanced and wearing masks, a small gathering of neighbors conversed about pot holes, infrastructure, the new library, 101 Ash Street, and how developers have been buying up single-home properties and erecting four- and eight-plex units. Even... with the housing shortage crisis, nobody wants more population, congestion and traffic in their single-family-zoned residential neighborhoods . As you may know, SCAC's mission is not to make political endorsements but to facilitate education about our local candidates so that you can be well informed when you make decisions at the ballot box. As an observation, this is the first time I have ever seen a mayoral candidate go out to each and every one of San Diego's "hamlets" and seek out feedback from community members, especially during these pandemic times. Mayoral candidate Todd Gloria is also welcome to visit San Carlos. We will let you know if and when that happens.

News from the San Carlos Community Garden Produce Swap this Saturday Register and join your neighbors for a produce swap in the Garden!... Bring your garden's fruits, vegetables and herbs to exchange with the crops of others. Bring your own bags to transport produce, wear a mask and be ready to practice social distancing. We'll do our best to sanitize and maintain a safe six feet of distance. Then we'll all wash our hands and produce when we get home after sharing in our neighborhood's bounty. Now the second and fourth Saturdays from 9:30-10:15 am, the swap is managed by Rosemary, formerly of the Lake Murray Co-op Produce Swap. Please go to their website - https://www.lakemurrayproduce.com/ and read all about them. Then scroll to the bottom of any page to submit the produce you would like to contribute to the swap. The swap will be held in the San Carlos Community Garden. We hold our weekly Garden open house on Saturdays so all are welcome to come and enjoy the Garden from 9-11 am whether swapping or not. A note about the Second Sunday Community Concerts for all those who enjoy these monthly concerts. It's been a long summer without all the free musical concerts who usually have. When they resume again, I'm sure we'll all be super thankful.

Hey San Carlosians, how are you faring during these surreal Covid times? Please share your thoughts, photos and videos. President Mark Schulze and VP Patty Mooney have been escaping by mountain bike into Nature where encounters with the "local residents" brings much joy.

San Carlos friends and neighbors joined us at December's Holiday Potluck Gathering. Luciano's Tomato, Basil & Mozarella Bruschetta was a big hit, and @ArielVoss brought an apple pie that was "to die for." Max's veggie lasagna was super tasty and so were Marilyn's meatballs. Wendy Wheatcroft, who is running for Councilman Scott Sherman's seat (District 7), stopped by to say "Hello." A great time was had by all.

SCAC President Mark Schulze and VP Patty Mooney attended the Enhancery Jewelers holiday soiree last night. What a great selection of food, including all types of cheeses, tender salmon filets, and little beef sandwiches. And a wine bar. Not to mention ongoing raffles of fun prizes. Patty wore the pearl earrings she won at last year's raffle. This year Mark won a gift card to one of San Diego's best seafood restaurants, The Brigantine La Mesa. A great time was had by all! Thanks so much to our gracious hosts, Kathleen and Martin White.

SCAC President Mark Schulze & VP Patricia Mooney attended the annual meeting of the General Membership of the San Carlos Friends of the Library. The Guest Speaker was Patrick Stewart (no, not SIR Patrick Stewart), new CEO of the San Diego Public Library Foundation. Of course we all pelted him with questions about when San Carlos will finally get a new library, after the community has patiently been waiting for decades. Why? It's complicated. The adjoining parking lot was formerly a gas station and needs to be tested and mitigated by the State of California Water Board, for probably the next two years. And THEN, maybe, maybe, we can pierce the soil with a shovel and construct our dream library.

County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher joined us last night at our monthly SCAC meeting. My favorite moment during his presentation was his anecdote about how two ladies were thrilled to meet him, and even had a selfie taken with him. Then as they walked away, they said "I can't believe we just met Gavin Newsom." He also spoke about the issue of Homelessness and what actions the County Boardmembers have been taking to solve the problem. (Photo by Patty Mooney)

A diverse crowd of people - and dogs - appeared at the Ocean Beach home of Jim Bell yesterday to bid him adieu. Then the group split up to either board a sailboat that would inter Jim's body to the sea, or walk over to the Holding Company to dance all night long. SCAC President Mark Schulze and VP Patty Mooney chose to go to the dance floor, which is where Jim would have been.

After attending Don Endicott's presentation about Mountain Lions at Mission Trails Regional Park a couple of weeks ago, we know this is not typical behavior from this young mountain lion. It will be very sad if it has to be euthanized.
