Congratulations to the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who were featured in the Senior Project Showcase last week. Many of the projects dis...played sustainable advancements including one group in particular that worked with your Sac State Sustainability team to create a trommel system that will be used to sort post-consumer food waste in Sac State's continuing efforts to compost as much of its organic materials onsite. The showcase also featured an upcoming project in which another group of Mechanical Engineering students will convert one of our carts to run on solar energy! Our amazing Sac State students are working hard to make Sac State a more sustainable campus! See more

Jason Hall, left, Matthew M. Swanson, Rogelio Rodriguez, and Michael Edwards are the creators of the vertical axis wind turbine, a proof of concept of a wind turbine optimized for areas like Sacramento with low average wind speed conditions. The potentially revolutionary design is constructed from a steel frame and carbon fiber composite. Its twisted construction is designed to provide consistent force through each revolution, maximizing its efficiency. (Sacramento State/Jessica Vernone)

Aquaponics display by Sacramento State is up for viewing at the California State Fair Farm. Students are using the display to educate the public about sustainable alternative methods for producing food. Key notes to aquaponics is water efficiency, rapid plant growth, produces protein alongside plants, and can be done anywhere without the need for soil.
