Meet the Cast of Blood at the Root. Meet Tywan "Shungo" Taylor. Tywan is in his sixth year at CSUEB, and he is majoring in Mathematics. In the play, he will be playing the role of De'Andre. This production is very special to Tywan because it allows him to show a side of himself that he does not generally feel comfortable expressing. He believes that learning to express himself more will help him to attain more acting roles in the future. Tywan hopes that "BLOOD AT THE ROOT" w...ill positively impact every individual in the audience. He hopes the play will evoke emotions deep down inside that will stir and drive out past hurt or joy that most people may subconsciously be running from. Having been ostracized by society in a fastidious manner based on his appearance, he knows not what it's like to embrace every part about oneself. In playing the role of De'Andre, he hopes to convey the message that everyone can move through their pain and become whole. For himself, he sees acting as his defibrillator. It provides a sharp jolt that he can use to resurrect confidence within himself. #BloodAtTheRootCSUEB #CSUEB #CSUEBTD #Theatre See more

The CSUEB Departments of Social Work and Theatre & Dance, along with faculty and students across campus, are collaborating on a "Healing the Trauma of Racism Altar" in our University Theatre Lobby. We envision this as a community project that is added to by diverse contributors across campus throughout the year, and hope that it can serve as a focal point for healing and for learning about the effects of racism on all of our bodies, minds, and spirits. As a second wing of the... altar project, we have launched the "Healing the Trauma of Racism Altar - Movement Project." Full project can be viewed as it evolves here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/166070... or https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... We will collect videos of duets (1 - 2 minutes long) between one person moving and one person either speaking, singing, playing music, rapping, or contributing sound in some way. The duets will engage with the themes of the altar and can either take place in person at the altar site (CSUEB's University Theatre Lobby,) remotely on zoom, or in person at other locations. Anyone is invited to initiate and/or participate in one of these social justice focused duets. No previous experience needed. We can film your duet or you can. We can pair you with a duet partner, or you can pick your own. In-person participants must wear face coverings and stay at least 6 feet apart from each other. People of all abilities/disabilities, ethnicities, body size & shape, ages, artistic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and body identities are invited to contribute. Contact Department Chair Eric Kupers at [email protected] to join in. THEMES The duets can address any and/or all of these themes, in whatever ways make sense to the artists: 1. Say Their Names: Honoring the memory of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color killed by the police and white supremacy culture in the last two decades (or more); 2. Ancestral Healing: Connecting to our diverse ancestral lineages for rituals, stories, practices, and other healing elements; 3. Intersectionality: Exploring the intersectional webs of oppression, identity, and social justice activism; 4. Planting Seeds for a World Free of Racism: How do we envision a world without racism? What kinds of inclusive community structures do we dream of? How do we get there? 5. Loving and Inhabiting our Bodies: Making space for the unique body each of us lives in (the only one exactly like this, ever in the universe, throughout time.) How can we honor all of our emotional, spiritual, energetic, and physical experiences of racism, trauma, healing, and renewal from within our own bodies? How can we embody social justice now? How can we respect the inherent value and dignity of all bodies--and especially those very different from our own? For more info contact: [email protected]

Meet the Cast of Blood at the Root. Meet Marley Maduakolam. Marley is a freshman at CSUEB, majoring in Theater and Dance. He will be dancing in the Ensemble. This production is very special for Marley as it will be his first time dancing in college. He believes this opportunity is just the beginning of many avenues of performing he may have in the future. What he wishes most out of Blood at the Root is to impact every individual in the audience, whether it be one of immense... joy, unbearable sadness, or uncontrollable laughter. Having lost his Grandma and Great-Grandpa, who supported and believed in him through his Autism diagnosis, he knows what it is like to be isolated and alone, fighting for existence. Still, with dancing in the Ensemble, he hopes to convey the message that everyone has a voice and an amazing story to tell through rhythm and poetry and movement, waiting to be revealed to the world. #BloodAtTheRootCSUEB #CSUEB #CSUEBTD #Theatre See more

The CSUEB Music Department's EAST BAY SINGERS visited the Healing the Trauma of Racism Altar yesterday and honored the altar with three songs, sung outside, physically distanced, facing the altar. It was a magical moment of collaboration, solidarity, and synchronicity. Check out the choir's director Buddy James' video from the spontaneous event: https://youtu.be/wSM2Ex7WrDA

Meet the Cast of Blood at the Root. Meet Isabella Marseline. Isabella is a senior at East Bay with a major in Musical Theatre. She will be playing the role of Toria. She is excited as this will be her first part in a non-musical play since high school. After filming on Zoom for the past month, this has been an experience unlike any other. We all need some form of theatre and artistic expression during this time. This play touches on many themes that are extremely significant today: racism, homophobia, activism, complicity, and more. She has a feeling that anyone who sees this play will remember it for a long time. Please tell your friends and family to watch the show, for it will be worth it. #BloodAtTheRootCSUEB #CSUEB #CSUEBTD #Theatre

The Mini-WAC group (a subgroup within the CSUEB White Antiracist Collective) held a workshop in Anti-Racist Process Painting on 10/20/20, led by Kathryn Palmieri. Members of the group were joined by members of the Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble to paint from whatever thoughts, feelings, and images arose in response to Anti-Racist prompts. We painted in silence, to allow for turning inwards and accessing the deeper levels of our being, not always available in social interactions. Many of the paintings have been placed on the Altar.

The CSUEB Music Department Chair Buddy James and the East Bay Singers came to the altar Thursday to "sing to it" and add their beautiful voices to this project. It so happened that I (Eric Kupers) was on campus and teaching the Inclusive Interdisciplinary Ensemble class at the time (via zoom.) Our students danced online to the in-person voices of the singers. It was a powerful moment for many of us. And hopefully this is the beginning of many more collaborations between our departments and ensembles during this time.

Meet the Cast of Blood at the Root. Meet Richard Nguyen. Richard is a senior at Cal State East Bay, majoring in Musical Theater, and he will be playing the roles of DA and Ensemble. This show is very special for him because he thinks it is a great show that calls for action, and it’s an important show in our current social and political climate. He believes this show has a beautiful script, the characters are relatable, and he hopes to convey the message that things need to change for the better, and we can fight for a better world for everyone. #BloodAtTheRootCSUEB #CSUEB #CSUEBTD #Theatre
