What happened at RING 313 on Tuesday December 15, 2020? Glad you asked. We enjoyed a lecture from Dr. Simon Carmel facilitated by our Vice President Steven Longacre. President Dave Peltier called the meeting to (dis)order promptly sometime after 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. We chose this day to meet this year because this is the day that we usually would host a holiday party to celebrate the holidays: you know New Year, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, and...Continue reading

JANUARY 26TH ZOOM MEETING 7:00 pm Maestro David Regal Online Lecture! DAVID REGAL has written for television series ranging from Rugrats to Everybody Loves Raymond and co-wrote the Lionsgate feature Angel of Mine. In addition, he has authored several highly regarded books of magic theory and methods routines of his design have been seen by millions of people around the globe. He recently served as head writer/co-executive producer of TV’s The Carbonaro Effect, where, over ...the course of six years, he created and collaborated on literally hundreds of original effects. David has received the Genesis Award, twice been named Lecturer of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts (the parent organization of the Magic Castle), and is the recipient of the AMA’s Creative Fellowship. About Regal's new book INTERPRETING MAGIC, here is what two reviewers think of this tome. To read the complete review visit Regal's website (you can purchase the book there as well) www.DavidRegal.com. Genii Magazine Interpreting Magic Review by Francis Menotti David Regal is not human. Over the hours, nodaysof thoroughly digesting the more than 500 pages of his freshly released tome, it is evident that the man is part elfish imp, part unstoppable robot, and a fully whimsical creative genius with the witty demeanor of a mischievous Terry Pratchett character. If one is looking for another procedural, academic textbook featuring the here’s-a-trick, here’s-the-method format, they will be disappointed. This is a journey through magic and its construction and its betterment. It is a collection of time-and experience-tested thoughts, cleverly disguised in tricks, moves, routines, essays, and an impressive number of interviews with many of today’s top minds in magic. INTERPRETING MAGIC Review by Michael Close It has been ten years since David Regal has gifted us with a big book of magic; that book was the wonderful Approaching Magic. His new book is Interpreting Magic, and it, too, is wonderful, with a wide variety of clever routines of all types (suitable for close-up, parlor, and stage), insightful essays, and interviews with a who’s-who of top creators and performers. There is literally something for everyone here. If you want to skip the rest of the review and head right to David’s website to order the book, here’s the bottom line. If this book only had the magic routines, it would be worth the price. If this book only had the essays, it would be worth the price. If this book only had the interviews, it would be worth the price. To get all three, packed into a beautifully produced, 565 page book is a gift. In fact, it’s the gift that keeps on giving, because I know you will return to it often to find magic you previously overlooked and to remind yourself of the wealth of useful information contained within.

25th Anniversary plans The John Fedko Ring was established in 1995. Our leaders were students of the late John Fedko. The year 2020 was the 25th Anniversary of our founding. We had planned to celebrate this milestone with a special dinner party, an evening of member performance, where each member is invited to perform their favorite Magic Trick developed by our founder John Fedko. With the onset of the pandemic our plans were postponed. We have postponed the 25th anniversary celebration perhaps to a date late in this year. When it is safe for us to congregate we will do so to honor the first 25 years of The John Fedko Ring.

Have you paid your dues for 2021? You should have received a dues notice with a SASE to pay your dues. Find it and send in your payment today. Thank you! Regular membership is $45.00 for a year's worth of magical fun. With $45.00 you will get the opportunity to meet six master performers and learn some of their secrets. This small investment has a HUGE payoff. In addition, on the evenings that we do not host a lecturer, you get to enjoy your friends who are members of Ring 313. What a deal.

IBM Ring 313 30.09.2020

Notes from the September 8 2020 Gathering of IBM Ring 313 for LITE Meeting on Zoom Our virtual doors opened at 7:00 pm and closed just a few moments past 9:00 pm Josh Serrano convened the meeting on ZOOM and acted as our host. Attendees included: Kevin Brown (aka Nidouh), Todd Reis, Howard Xuan, Steven Longacre, Can Tang, Larry Campbell, John Engm, Philip Henderson, and special guest 8-year-old Huxley Craig, a student in Josh Serrano’s magic school.... Members discussed various magical specials available online either free or paid. We watched a YouTube video from a Penn and Teller Fool Us of a show stopper quick change artist who managed to fool and delight Penn and Teller. I am a big fan of quick-change artists. This performer, Léa Kyle, was as good as I have seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-4VnDChuYE We also watched a short video featuring Derren Brown that killed. Brown writes about himself in his book Tricks of the Mind, I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty. As I say in each show, 'I mix magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. I happily admit cheating, as it's all part of the game. I hope some of the fun for the viewer comes from not knowing what's real and what isn't. I am an entertainer first and foremost, and I am careful not to cross any moral line that would take me into manipulating people's real-life decisions or belief systems. Several of us performed new tricks including two effects by young Huxley. Kevin Brown used the occasion to recruit performers for the October meeting of Kevin Brown’s Bizarre and Mental acts. Halloween effects are welcome as well. Can Tang is working on a project and Steven Longacre has a corona virus themed project. He showed us some lovely dog toys that glow and squeak with spines on them reminiscent of the image of the coronavirus. Kevin Brown recommended PropDog a website based in England as a source for some of his wacky items. https://www.propdog.co.uk/ https://www.propdog.co.uk/comedy-gags/mini-magician https://www.propdog.co.uk/comedy-gags/bonsalls-little-bird Todd Reis recommended SNAPS which is available from Penguin magic. The meeting adjourned at about 9:00 pm. Much appreciation to Josh Serrano for hosting the meeting.
