The Power of Gratitude What is it about Thanksgiving that makes everyone smile?! A hint, it isn’t about the stuffing or the sleepy feeling after the tryptophan in the turkey kicks inThe secret power of Thanksgiving is the focus on what we are thankful for. Adopting this attitude of gratitude can really make a difference in our lives- both mentally and physically! Happiness: Did you know that gratitude is associated with increased happiness and lower rates of depression? As g...ratitude is oriented toward the positive, it is not compatible with the negative triad of depression symptoms- negative views about self, world, and future. And it gets better, not only is thankfulness linked to improved mood and happiness, but it also is related to lower risk for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, phobias, and addictions. Better Relationships: Those that regularly express gratitude are more likely to engage in helpful behavior and resolve conflict with a willingness to forgive. Many studies have connected gratitude with feelings of increased connection and satisfaction of relationships. So practicing gratitude can actually help to promote such characteristics and improve relationships! Better Health: We all know that stress and lack of sleep is bad for our health, but for many of us it seems unavoidable in our busy lives. But don’t just accept this, there is something we can do without adding more hours to the day- practicing gratitude has been linked with decreased stress levels and improved quality of sleep! Getting some better Zzz’s can improve both physical and mental health! In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I challenge you to consciously practice more gratitude in your life. See what this focus on the positive can do for you. If you or someone you know is struggling with sadness or depression, share this with them or encourage them to talk to someone. Seeking professional help is courageous and the first step to a better you.
